Replaced my water pump and thermostat today. I thought for sure that a broken WP was the root cause of my intermix and coolant leak. The WP impeller was intact so cracked head was not caused by impeller parts clogging the system. Not sure then what caused the head to crack - loss of coolant due to a slow leak?. The old WP did not look too bad. The bearing was a little loose but not excessive, and there was only a slight noise when I spin the pulley. Comparing it to the new WP though - the sound is drastically different. The new one was tight and did not spin easily, and there was no noise at all on the new one when I spin it. Could also have been a thermostat gone bad? - I will see if I can test the old Tstat. Either way both have been replaced now. Anybody know of anything else I should check? If the intermix is from a cracked head the head probably just cracked. This just happens and AFAIK the engine doesn't have to get hot, or any thing really go wrong. Just age/miles -- and the uncountable expansion and contraction cycles that are normal for a car engine -- can be enough. If there is intermix avoid running the engine and get the intermix cause id'd and fixed.

176000 miles is a lot of miles, I would be more amazed if at that mileage the heads were still crack free. From what I have heard the 3.4 engines are more likely to have that happen.
