So I was trying to build my next Porsche a
992
but while building it up couldn't help to feel disappointed to say the least that Porsche wants to charge me thousands for keyless entry, ventilated seats and panoramic camera, my build was close to 160,000 USD for a
Carrera
S.
I feel like I paid 10,000 USD a night for a room at a 5 star ultra exclusive hotel and they are charging me hundreds for a bottle of water, clean towels and shampoo.
Porsche lives to rip off customers and this will continue going on because we customers are willing to pay whatever they want to charge, supply and demand I guess...
In the grand old tradition of capitalism as applied to restricted supply luxury goods, Porsche charges what they think they can get. If you cannot deal with that, perhaps you should try another brand.
Welcome to the world of Porsche. It's why I buy used. Let that first poor bastard take the depreciation hit and eat the cost of all those options that amount to nothing at resale.
Trust me I can deal with that price, perhaps buy 2 of them if I want, also I might may much more than you make in a year, but still don't like to get ripped off, who likes to get ripped off? Rich or poor who likes to get ripped off?
It isn‘t a ripoff if it’s voluntary. You don’t like the price, don’t buy it.
It may feel like a rip off during the build step, but I bet it feels like its all worth it when that car arrives from overseas and, after long anticipation, you get in and drive it off the dealer lot!
So you can option the car to be close to 200,000 USD but still have to pay thousands for having ventilated seats in a hot summer? Just because you like to get ripped off it doesn't mean Porsche prices correctly its cars.
Well when my head liner started sagging, my doorr panel warping and
sport chrono
stopped working my interior started rattling and many other problems I had.... No it wasn't worth paying >80k for my 981 when I bought it new, also the services are a rip off.. Headliner I had to pay 1600 USD because I was 1 month out of warranty, these Germans rip you off at the beginning and at the end. 300 USD for a f oil change? close to 2000 USD for oil change, belt replacement,
spark plugs
etc service? LOL. Again not because YOU! like to get ripped off it means everyone should get ripped off and feel good about it. 😁
At least Porsche can back the financial premiums of acquisition and maintenance with products that live up to their legends on and off the race track. For any company to stay that venerable over time isn't cheap or easy.
So where exactly is this post going? I can afford to buy 2 - 3 new GT3’s this year, too.
What’s the point other than expressing frustration? OP won’t get much compassion on a Porsche forum.
While I understand the frustration with the entry and maintenance prices associated with Porsche cars, I also recognize that there is sufficient information available to avoid this being a surprise.
Like anything you buy, you have to decide what it is worth to you.
For me, P-cars provide a value I'm willing to pay for.
I've also been lucky - 6 German cars; some over 20 years old; and few unexpected service costs.
So many Porsche *** kissers, like complaining about Porsche hurts their feeling like I berated their own mother, grow up people, you guys are childish or narcissistic people. LOL
So you can spec a 992 Carrera S and you have to pay thousands to get a simple ventilated seat and 360 camera as well as keyless entry, no value in my opinion, also the cost of maintenance is insane.
How you spec a car is your business. You decide what you want or not.
There are lots of fun and capable alternatives out there.
OP seems to have a problem with his bed. Both sides appear to be wrong.
Genesis - you're the reason the forum has an "ignore" function. I'll never again be tempted to waste time reading your worthless drivel. (Including what I'm sure will be a nasty reply to this..)
Have a nice life.
Porsche uses Value-Based Pricing which places a premium on the brand experience.
Valuing Value-Based Pricing
Either a buyer is OK with that or not...there's no arguing whether Porsche should change the model, as its works for the company and their target customer groups. Porsche further differentiates its pricing model by making most options extra cost, enabling a buyer to create a truly unique vehicle. Again, a buyer is either OK with that or not.
Clearly, OP isn't OK with Porsche's Value-Based pricing or pay-as-you-build approach and might want to look at other automotive brands to get what he wants.
OP, it is simply a matter of different views. If you proposed to average EU customer the idea of buying a Porsche off of a dealer's lot they would frown at the idea and, if they agreed to take the car, most would complain about 360 degrees camera and ventilated seats as unnecessary options they do not want and they had to pay for them.
In the US opposite is true. People want to have everything included. Maybe the best solution for you is to skip the configurator and search for a new car in US that has all options you want. You will get also instant delivery, another thing very important to customers here.
Good luck!

These cars are very expensive to buy and also to maintain. I understand that might not be OK with you, and if you feel like they are ripping you off and the value is not there for you, you probably will resent the car and not enjoy it if you buy it. If I felt the way you feel I wouldn't have a Porsche.
The only new car I ever purchased was a 1972 Alfa Romeo for $5,300 I sold it a year ago for $54K and then paid $38K for a 14Cayman Base and I change my oil in 20 minutes for $50. If you don’t have a lot of money you find a way to enjoy a premium sports car, work on it yourself or find an honest indy to do what you can’t. I rest my case.
Totally agree. I don't have a ton of disposable income, but I figured out a way to purchase and maintain. I do the basic things myself, oil changes, brakes, etc. But if needed, I won't hesitate to use a local well respected indy.
Here's another newsflash for you: Porsche has hundreds of extremely expensive options that I would not dream of purchasing yet they have value to someone. It's only a rip off if you are somehow forced to pay for something because you have no other choice. The Porsche brand is built around choices made for those who want something rather than needing it.
This is the price of playing in the Porsche sandbox. It's optional. Try buying a car from that Maranello brand, Porsche costs will look like
Toyota
.
So in order to get ventilated seats (not a luxury) you have to pay 2330 USD for a 14 way seat? So can you please rephrase what is rip off, if this is not a rip off? They force you to pay 2330 USD basically if you want your butt to be cooled during a hot summer. I call it rip off. Also have to pay for stupid keyless entry in a car that can easily be 150 to 200k USD? Isn't this a rip off?
Porsche sheeps will pay whatever porsche will ask, of course cuz its a porche.
I only purchase pre-owned vehicles any more - and never again from a dealership. I understand some folks don't care to work on their own vehicles, but I don't mind getting a little dirt and grease under my fingernails. I save quite a bit of dough by performing most maintenance tasks myself. An oil change on my CS is currently under $80. using
Mobil
-1 and a
Mahle
filter.
...and even if you are not so inlined there are numerous very good independent shops out there; they generally represent considerable savings over continued dealer maintenance.
This is maybe becoming (or has become) un-constructive thread, and possibly not worth resurrecting... I'm I don't 100% agree with this, particularly as it relates to the Cayman. There is some amount of fanboi'ism and autojournalist pontification driving pricing, but there are other things to consider. I very much hate having to pay gobs of money for features that are standard on $20K cars, I'm not sure I agree with your original "rip-off" sentiments.
While I have had 3 Cayman's (a 987, 981, and a 718, all S's), I'm neither a p-car fanboi nor a mid-engine die-hard. In the mix I've had a Lotus Evora (S), some BMWs, and actually currently in a '19 C7 Corvette (last of the manuals
). I'm currently in market to replace the Corvette... lease ending soon, so I'm on the hunt again, and also dismayed at prices. BUT....
It all depends on what you value and want out of a car:
Focusing on
Caymans
/Boxsters... Where I don't agree with your statement is that, what I am finding is if I want the Goldie-locks combination of what the current Cayman provides (especially with a warranty), at the price point (especially with Manual Trans) there's not much competition out there. If I want this combination of things that, frankly, no one else is providing, I have no choice but to pay what Porsche asks. Maybe not true of other models but as you branch out into other models, you get more into the discretionary/luxury purchase arena, at which point complaining about price-gouging is kind of pointless. Porsche is capitalizing on the very rare air here.
Let's look at some competitors: Evora GT? Too "track-focused" for my needs, was (I hate to admit) too raw for me... and build quality issues. New Corvette maybe? No manual, and even if that was not a concern, not as small and practical as Cayman. Aston Vantage? WAY too expensive. Used 981? I want more power (my only complaint about my 981 S). New
911
? Not same car, at all. Don't really like its size or feel of rear-engine format, but even if I got over that, also not as practical (for my use) as the Cayman... plus anything with the power bump that 2017+ provides is 80-120K used, and mostly out-of-budget new.
I don't think I'm alone here. Which means, Porsche gets to charge what they want. Predatory? Maybe. But what would be your proposed alternative? Just make them cheaper? Sure why not... shareholders be d_mned. But consider this too... if they did, the only way many would be able to get one is if they significantly increased production, b/c they'd be all bought up more quickly. then you have Supply vs demand... which drives prices up, no matter what their options-pricing strategy is. So should they increase production? There's whole mess of business strategy there and starts to become a pointless discussion, IMO.
It frustrates me, but if I am being TOTALLY honest, I'm just mad because it makes it harder for ME to get what I want without paying the price
Agree 100% with your statement, a nice competitor would be the new C8 base or slightly used is an insane value and not horribly I fervor to a cayman or base
911
. Cheers! I will never buya porsche again. Thanks for your thoughts.
What a useless post. Value is completely subjective to the individual. Seems like the OP is just looking for some external validation.
Yes like you said value is subjective and for me when porche charges you more than 3,000 USD for ventilated seats in a
Cayenne
is not value. Seems it wasn't that useless after all you took time to read.through it, genius.
@Genesis
- Porsche is not a value-oriented brand and never has been. They are toys for people with a lot of disposable income. If you're looking for value, buy pre-owned or find a different brand.
But eve rich people like me loves value, it's not my fault you like to get ripped off.

So for example Porsche charges you more than 3,000 USD for just ventilated seats and you call this acceptable? I call rip off! If you guys like to be ripped off its not my fault!
People stop at the drive through every day and drop $5 for a cup of coffee. This equates to $1000-1500 a year for something worth $100. I consider this an incredible waste of money but if that's what people want to spend their money on, who cares?
Plus like the post says this is just my opinion and the way I feel, did not make this post to make your little lives better, just posted my opinion as our constitution allows. So many Porsche sheeps or Porsche stock owners but hurt because I said something negative about their beloved brand, grow up guys there are people who think differently in this world.
So you made a post about your opinion and when others chime in with their opinion that doesn’t align with yours, you tell them to “grow up” and call their lives “little”? What’s the point of posting in a public forum? Are you just looking for opinions that matches your own? Also, it’s pretty obvious you flaunt your “wealth” every chance you get. Maybe you should grow up.
