Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So he changed the fuel regulator, dropped the 10mm bolt, couldn't find it...
Leading evidence: 'Replace fuel regulator, dropped the 10mm bolt, couldn't find it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'throttle adjustment will be required perhaps' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust idle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion · Original poster
When restarted it works normally, but with a slow adjusting idle.

Suspected cause
Cable throttle will be different obviously if an early car in which case i suspect throttle adjustment will be required perhaps.

Suggestion
Also worth removing and cleaning the throttle butterfly too while you're at it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After a little reading, i tried the throttle body recalibration that did the trick.
My recently purchased 996 c2 has an irritating starting procedure.
Att first start up when cold it fires up and then cuts out within 1-2 seconds, it wont idle. If I try to keep it going with the throttle, it usually dies anyway. When restarted it works normally, but with a slow adjusting idle.
Is this a common fault? When warm it starts and idles normally, but feel a bit slow controlling idle rpm.
Its a cable throttle setup.
When i bought my C4 last year i had an " erratic " idle that bugged me. After a little reading, i tried the throttle body recalibration that did the trick.
What year is your car...? Cable throttle will be different obviously if an early car in which case i suspect throttle adjustment will be required perhaps.
Si.
Sorry, it's a 99 like mine..... try the TB recalibration.... open decklid and leave driver door open, turn ignition on 1st click , don't touch accelerator, wait 50 seconds , you'll hear the throttle body clicking. Turn off car for 10 seconds, restart and hopefully notice a difference in idle.
Worked for me but it's a C4 .
Sounds like a dodgy/sticky idle control valve to me. They are very simple to remove and clean with a good blast of brake cleaner. Also worth removing and cleaning the throttle butterfly too while you're at it.
Removed the idle control valve and it was completly stuck.
After disasembling and a good clean it moved freely and is now back on the car.
Unfortunately I dropped a T30 bit in the engine bay while working and have not yet found it
So I havent been able to test yet.
If the alternator spins freely and its not around the moving parts of the belt I guess its ”gone” and I can start the engine. Pulling the whole engine out to find it seems a bit harsh
You laugh but... Helping my lad last night and has a small collection of old classics including an early rare BMW 325 MSport Tech.. So he changed the fuel regulator, dropped the 10mm bolt, couldn't find it... Started it, heard a clattering noise... the bolt had been stuck in the fan housing, then thrown into and then behind the tin cam housing causing the teeth to jump throwing the timing and valves into the head!!!
Small job now an engine rebuild which fortunately he isn't that worried about but what are the odds...
Find that Torx
Yep, thats always a possibility when its not found
Luck was apperently on someone elses side that day...
I will continue my search and focus on the generator. Its close and magnetic so would be a logic place for it to be. The other logic place would be on top of the block, under the intake manifold.
But if I dont find it, the only moving parts are associated to the belt area and if its not there it should be fine (should and in theory, reality is a more complicated matter).
Progress has been made...
I removed the alternator and there it was, laying in one of the grooves in the block. So this time it would have been fine. But like stated above, you never know...
Ok, so now to the fun part. I reassembled everything and started the engine. It was a huge difference. The idle was completly stable and the throttle response was much better.
Havent driven the car yet, but it will probably be a totally different experience. Case closed
