I'd appreciate any tips from anyone who's done it, particularly how much collateral stuff to remove and disconnecting lines/fittings (the service manual refers to using either "two plastic spatulas" or a special Snap-on tool.) All info and suggestions welcome & appreciated.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Preparing to install new PS pump (confirmed bad - noise rotating by hand with belt off). I've read the service manual instructions and what I've found on the web, which aren't perfectly consistent. I'd appreciate any tips from anyone who's done it, particularly how much collateral stuff to remove and disconnecting lines/fittings (the service manual refers to using either "two plastic spatulas" or a special Snap-on tool.) All info and suggestions welcome & appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Ahsai. I've seen that; it's mostly lifted from the service manual with an added post re accessing bolts to the ac compressor. The manual says to remove the alternator, but some say that's not really that necessary. I read one article suggesting to pull the intake plenum (seems extreme), and another commenting on the difficulty in removing the line fittings. I kind of enjoy these kinds of projects, even more when I have a good plan and minimum need to stop and chase down special tools, parts, etc. Thanks again for your post!

POST 4Original post

No first hand experience here but I've worked around that area a few times for starter cable and alternator replacement. I would expect you don't need to remove the alternator (even if you have to, it's no big deal). I also expect you may need to remove the intake plenum (the one closest to the rear of the car) to gain access to the hard lines at the back of the pump. It's not difficult to remove the intake plenum if you follow the tips here in the description of Figure 7 http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti..._Separator.htm The only tricky thing may be the bolt at the back of the a/c compressor. You can just remove the engine temp sensor on the intake manifold and stick a wobble extension down there. Use an inspection mirror to locate the bolt and then use your hands to do everything by feel. Not difficult at all. I would say go for it, play by the ears and clear anything that's in your path
