Hi all, pretty sure my voltage regulator on my 2002 996 turbo tip has bitten the dust and as I'm going to paying to have it fixed, I might as well replace the entire alternator, which as far as I know, is 20 years old.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, pretty sure my voltage regulator on my 2002 996 turbo tip has bitten the dust and as I'm going to paying to have it fixed, I might as well replace the entire alternator, which as far as I know, is 20 years old. Problem is that I see blueprint parts online advertised as "manual transmission only", whereas Design911 parts diagram lists the same part number for both manual (M480) and tiptronic (M249) cars, which is 99760301212. Can anyone tell me if it's the same alternator on both the manual and tip cars please? Thanks in advance! Parts diagram: https://www.design911shop.com/diagrams/d/41180

POST 2Original post

I'm not sure about the parts number differences but I always get my alternator and starter motor repaired by a specialist shop, it works out much cheaper and you know the part will fit back where it came from

POST 3Original post

Think I remember someone saying the difference is that the tip alternator doesn't have the one way clutch in the pulley which the manuals do. If I've remembered correctly then I can't see it being a problem which one is fitted. I also know early cars had 120amp and later had 150amp which came from the factory with a 997 part number fitted! Mac

POST 4Original post

if design911 say the part is correct for the auto then it's their job to supply the right part https://www.design911.co.uk/p/alternator-porsche-996-turbo-997-boxster-987-cayman-987c-tiptronic-cars-99760301204-99760301206-99760301208-99760301200-99760301202-99760301209-99760301212-997603012lx/?source=911uk

Me too Got my vanilla 996 c2 alternator refurbed for 120 quid No idea if that's a good price I prefer fixing instead of throwing away and buying new Hopefully I'll still feel like that in a few years time if it keeps working

POST 9Original post

Would be good if there was a list somewhere of companies who refurb various bits - unless I missed it..

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I paid £150 delivered for a new 150 amp version - though I suspect it was actually a refurb. Means I can now get my old one refurbed and have it spare or sell it.

Hi mines just bitten the dust looking at options of replacement Vs recon at the moment, would like to upgrade to the 150A if possible where did you get yours for £150? and what brand do people recommend other than bosch which im seeing at approx £4-450. Cheers.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

From memory it was ebay - just check it's the 150A version. It's not that difficult to take out your old one and there are places that will refurb it dotted around for not a lot of money.

POST 13Original post

If it is the voltage regulator then change just the voltage regulator. It will cost between £12.50-£16 which was the cost for the two i did 3 years ago. Ebay or autodoc have the correct regulator pack and it is a very quick and simple job to change it. If you check my previous posts you will find instructions with pictures. It should take about an hour or so to remove the alternator change the regulator, clean the commutator and pop it all back in. And less expensive than buying a new alternator.
