I will check it out and concur it looks to be ‘2’ on the diagram, but it was the orientation to the engine that I was a little unsure of.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good day friends! I need some help from the hive mind, I have had my 996 for 2 weeks and working through some jobs. She is a little baggy, high owners and high mileage - but she is good enough for me. Last night I discovered an extremely concerning fuel leak to the passenger side injector rail, more worryingly I thought it was a air / oil separator leak and what looked like oil had pooled on the top of the spark plug recesses, I went back to inspect and it has evaporated, it was only when viewing the engine at idle I saw misting from the fuel line in the photo, thank god I found it. Two requests: 1) Can someone please help identify which is the supply and return line for my 1998 996 - assume yellow highlight is return? I can’t find replacements for the life of me. 2) Is the replacement of both these lines possible with the engine still in the car? Has anyone attempted this, I can’t find a decent how to any where which leads me to believe it’s a pig of a job. Thank you

POST 2Original post

Is the leak from the plastic hose to the fitting or between the mating halves of the joint? If the latter, you may be able to disassemble, clean the mating surfaces and reseat in situ as it's a metal to metal joint (looks like a JIC fitting, but don't know the actual spec).

Thank you, it’s really hard to see, I will be spending some time stripping the car down this evening to see if I can salvage part numbers etc. if not, I have been looking at custom fuel lines which seem a reasonable alternative.

POST 4Original post

Regarding part numbers it looks like part 2 which is the return line: The EPC isn't clear on the difference but eurospares list 02 as discontinued and 04 as the latest revision. If you're looking at buying new I'd try the dealer - normally cheaper than Design911 and will check you have the latest revision, compatibility etc. In caser you don't already have it the EPC can be downloaded here: Porsche Classic Genuine Parts Catalogue | Porsche Great Britain The fascination of Porsche is timeless. How can you tell? Because more than two thirds of all the Porsche vehicles ever built are still on the road... www.porsche.com Worth trying to loosen then retighten the joint before you go toofar. It's low probability of success (10-20%) but easy to do in situ and could save you a ton of work. Not sure if that line can be replaced with the engine in situ.

What an amazing reply, thank you. I have heard it’s possible to swap the fuel lines with the engine in situ, but that was just one data point. I also need to investigate whether they are in 2 parts or not as am exploring custom motorsport fuel lines as an option. Thank you kindly for the link! I will check it out and concur it looks to be ‘2’ on the diagram, but it was the orientation to the engine that I was a little unsure of. Once again thank you for taking time out of your day to reply here! First port of call will be seeing if it just needs nipping up / undo clean and reinstall. Will call Porsche for a quote!
