Sooo after almost 3 full years of owning an 06 Cayman S and 42,000 miles on it I decided to trade her in.
I got an 07' 911 Turbo Coupe, Gt Silver, Tip, PASM, Sports Crono Plus, Bose , PCM, NAV, XM Radio, 16k miles on it. So heres where the trouble starts. I bought the car saturday night. I had checked out the car fax, the dealer (was a bentley dealership) presented me w/ papers showing that they had checked the engine etc and all that stuff.
About 150 miles after I left the bentley dealership my check engine light came on
. I stopped by auto zone on the way home to check the error code P0021 - Which a search on the internet for porsche 997 engines means "Position of camshaft in relation to crankshaft, Bank 2 Below limit"
Saddly I dropped my car off at a porsche Dealership on monday morning. On tuesday they had replaced the sensors and I got a call back later that day saying "well we put in the new sensors and it's still all f-d up. We are going to need to take the engine apart to figure out what is wrong"
The porsche service dept did let me know that they didn't see any metal shavings when they changed the oiil (although i think the oil had also been changed by the bently dealership a few hundred miles prior so who knows).
Porsche Service also said that they were certain that the engine had NOT been taken apart before (which they told me is a good thing). So the outlook they are giving me now is that I might possibly get my car back by the end of NEXT week.
Any advice? Can anyone help me decode what this error actually means (in lamens terms)? It is a tip so it's not like they could have over-revved it by missing a shift or something. I really like the car minus the engine problems. I would really like for them to fix it and then i can go about my merry way.
Sorry about your experience, oddly enough I have my dealership currently looking at a '08 Turbo at a Bentley dealership in Vegas.
I hope everything will work out for you, once it runs you will have all but forgotten what you had to get through to get there.
Luckily you're still covered under warrenty!
No idea what the code means, but wishing you luck with everything. :et us know how it turns out?
Perhaps the code suggests a variocam issue based on the camshaft/crank misalignment? Has the dealer ever encountered the error code before? At least it's under warranty. Keep us posted.
Ok, spoke the service manager today. He said there was an Engineer at the dealership for another issue so the Porsche engineer and the mechanic took apart the engine together to troubleshoot the issue.
I will try to recall the best I can from memory as I am not a technical car person. I believe what he said was that the the cam shaft was spinning in such a way that it was cutting off the oil supply which caused the check engine light to come on. Porsche is replacing the entire cam shaft under warranty (on back order from germany though, hopefully it will come in sometime next week). They did not believe there was any damage done to the engine bc of this issue (but who knows, I don't speak car, only computer). Still slightly that there may have been some extra stress put on the engine by this, but I don't really know if that's just me being paranoid.
I am hoping/praying that when they get the new Cam Shaft put in place that it will be the end of this issue and that this baby will run w/o issues.
Lesson learned.. even w/ a porsche under fact warranty.. have the indy mechanic give it a clean bill of health.. atleast running a short test under piwis. could have been a lot worse i guess.
Seems reasonable. I suspect they've seen this before. Doubt there has been any permanent damage.
As already posted, likely no long term issues, warranty coverage and I presume the dealership is giving you a decent loaner. Although it's possible the seller cleared codes before delivery to you, it's also possible none were present and you just got some bad luck that'll delay your enjoyment for a short time.
BTW, if anyone's interested:
- 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo
- GT Silver Paint
- 8400 miles
- Cocoa Full Leather
- Heated Seats
- Sport Chrono
Original owner added red taillights, 3M protection (front and back) and an ipod adapter.
Priced at $89,900 ($126k new sticker) at a local BMW dealer.
Maybe your 06 Cayman got upset and put some Bad Mojo :taunt: on your 07 Turbo.
Ok, soooo they have the part. They are putting her back together and I am hoping for two of 3 possible outcomes.
1. Put it back together and no problems ever again
2. Put it back together and BOOOM it blows so they buy me a new engine under warranty
3. Put it back together and the Light comes back on, so they screw around w/ it for another 2 1/2 weeks
My vote is on 1 or 2.
I have been driving my 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee for the past 2 weeks
The loaners at the local P dealership suck. It's almost always a Jetta or a small Nissan... Not they aren't good cars, just not the same as the 997TT or even my old Cayman S for that matter..

oooooooook. So I FINALLLY got my car back yesterday. Today is 3 weeks from the day that I bought it lol.
Total cost of repairs covered under warrany from the invoice.
Parts: $2667.16
Lab-Mechanical: 5460.00
Total Charge: 8127.16
Oh, and a new power steering pump is on order... they are going to be replacing that as well (it's making noise).
The good news is that it is FAST!!!!
Wow. A couple of lessons there. Warranties matter and getting a clean bill of health from a Porsche mechanic before buying used is very important.
Porsche stood by you.
Tell me about it. Lesson Learned! Just bc it's under warranty and has relatively low mileage doesn't mean you can skip out on the indi mechanic check! Geeez!!! Thank god it is running again (knock on wood).
