Frustratingly the green cam caps are significantly more expensive than the washer you need to replace on the tensioner......

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone help me with identifying this part of my engine which appears to be leaking some fluid? It's on the nearside just above the anti roll bar.

POST 2Original post

Cam chain tensioner. Quite common. Do i win a prize?!?!?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ha ha! No prizes I'm afraid but thank you for the quick reply. Should I be concerned and is it a difficult fix?

POST 4Original post

I would be more concerned by the loose ARB clamp bolts...

Good spot! The photo was taken when the alignment was being done and the tech had lowered the bar for access. All buttoned up good and tight now

POST 7Original post

Think I had some leaks on the 3.4 and as I recall the Indy said that a lot of them weep. You’ll need new seals which are cheap but I’m not certain but think they ‘lock’ the engine somewhere so probably not a two minute job!

POST 8Original post

Yes, the seals are like 50p each but you need to lock the crank and the cam(s) on the side you're working on, otherwise the chain may jump a tooth. You'll also need to drop the oil.....or do it very quickly with a pan under.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sounds like a job to be done when it's next in for a service, which isn't far off. Thanks all for your guidance

POST 10Original post

It was the first job i did on my 997, It is very straight forward and there are several you tube guides. The gist of it is as follows: You start by prizing off two green (usually filthy black) discs about the size of a 50p. That exposes the cams/ grooves. You then buy a tool off ebay to slot into the grooves. The tool is held in position by a bolt. Once done you just undo the big nut, get covered with oil (optional), remove the whole lot clean up fit seals and washer and refit. When i did mine my camera was broken or i would have produced a write up,

POST 11Original post

Don't forget to lock the crank too. Dependant on whether its 3.4 or 3.6 is a different tool to lock the cam or cams.

POST 12Original post

Aha, I did not know a 3.4 needed a different locking tool and yes the crank is locked with a big pin as seen in this tool kit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27652613...teid=0&campid=&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1 But design 911 says the 3.4 uses the same kit as a 3.6????? https://www.design911.co.uk/p/porsche-996-997-camshaft-adjustment-tool-kit-1262/

POST 13Original post

Frustratingly the green cam caps are significantly more expensive than the washer you need to replace on the tensioner......

POST 15Original post

Top one is 3.4 cam locking tool Bottom one is 3.6
