Suggestion
If you are having misfires on one particular bank I would suggest you check the ground connections for that bank.
Leading evidence: 'Check ground connections' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ground connections' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Recently had the engine out to do the clutch and I replaced the lifters as I was getting a bit of cold start noise ( it's not bore score) and thought I'd been careful so my quest is what could it be , I've done the coil packs and it didn't help so next I'm thinking , exhaust sensors, smoke test if I buy a machine and maybe check the timing as I've had the cams out ?

Also, I have never done any internal engine work on a flat 6, so I don't know what the recommended process is, but did you make sure to properly break in the new lifters?

You will need a diagnostic tool, like Durametric, to look at the engine running parameters.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There really is no difference between the versions in terms of diagnostics, just the pro version allows for unlimited VIN's.
Hi guys , got this random misfire problem on bank one p300 codes across all three cylinders, engine starts from cold and then the idle hunts a few times before settling , then she idles ok until she starts to get warm then it goes lumpy , driving me crazy !! Was thinking do the oxygen sensors in the exhaust first as I have them or will this not fix it ?
Any help much appreciated, oh I don't have a durametric just a simple code reader, is it worth getting one ? Money money money money , one day I will drive this car instead of lying under it lol!
You will need a diagnostic tool, like Durametric, to look at the engine running parameters. There is no other way, unless you want to just throw parts/money at the car.
Hi Joe
Can you tell if the cam timing is out with the durametric, would be helpful without having to check it manually, then at least if I did need to adjust it I know the work would be worth it ?
It could be lots of things and I think a Durametric would give you lots of helpful information, and they really aren't that expensive for all of the great info you get and time they can save. Also, I have never done any internal engine work on a flat 6, so I don't know what the recommended process is, but did you make sure to properly break in the new lifters? If you ate a lifter that could certainly cause your issue.
If you are having misfires on one particular bank I would suggest you check the ground connections for that bank.
Bank 1 ground wires are located near the lower part of the AOS on the head on bank 1.
The ground wires for bank 2 are located on the head near the A/C compressor on bank 2.
When I had my misfire problems, I found that I had no ground connections on bank one. When I realized this, I thought I had found my problem, so I added a ground strap No luck 😩. Eventually, I swapped out my coils and the car has been fine ever since (around 10k miles). I know you said youve done the coils, but just to be sure, Id swap them with the bank 2 coils to see if the misfires move with them. Good luck
Yes, Durametric can tell you your cam timiing and cam deviations plus so much more. It really is an excellent tool for diagnosing the engine parameters.
I don't recall there being a ground wire on bank one , I know there is one on bank two I fitted, I bought the car incomplete so maybe it was just missing and I never realised , should every model have two straps?
Here is the ground wire for bank 1. It's the wire above the cam plug. The other end goes into the harness that has the wires for the injectors, coils, etc...
Ok I'll check it not sure if it's mounted in front my od the crank sensor bracket , maybe it should be behind in direct contact with the head?
I'm getting flashing CEL though which makes me think over furling that's why I way going to do the pre cat sensors what you think?
Joe
Is the basic durametric good enough , I can see a home user one for 300 in the Uk pro version for 450, I know the home user will only do three cars and the other is unlimited, are there any other differences ?
Thanks
All you need is the "home user" version. There really is no difference between the versions in terms of diagnostics, just the pro version allows for unlimited VIN's.
Thanks joe, got one on order! Will need you guys to help me with the readings!!
I've also replaced the exhaust sensors which didn't fix the problem, I'm now thinking variocam unit or solenoid!
As I recall there is very little that can be coded on 996's. The only items I can think of are cruise control and on-board computer.
Newer versions like 997 and up have many more coding options, like auto door locks, power window functions, etc.
How many miles on the engine?
Did this start only after the engine was removed and replaced?
A compression and leakdown test might be useful while you are waiting for the "tool".
