Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace air oil separator' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check photos we took' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Put it all back together, again following the other instructions in reverse and checking photos we took.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just changed the AOS on a '99 996. Followed the (other website) instructions and everything went as described. Put it all back together, again following the other instructions in reverse and checking photos we took. All hoses, wire connectors and tubes seem like they all went back in their original places. But now, the car wont start. After 10 minutes of trying, it stumbled twice but that was it. Also, when cranking, the starter motor would stop after just a second or two. It's never done that before. I don't see how anything I did was related to spark or fuel.
Any ideas please???
Thanks!
I found the crank sensor from the bottom, pulled on the sensor and the wiring and seems solid. Same from reaching from the top. But yea, it's in the vacinity. So, I thought, maybe the intake plenum rubber boots, maybe one got pinched and letting to much air in. Removed the throttle body and all looks fine. Then I though, maybe the rear plenum didn't get the vacuum line reconnected, but it's connected. Now, I'm watching a step by step video from FCP Euro to see if I missed anything. So far, nothing stands out.
The only thing I noticed is that the front (rearward) plenum has a rubber boot on each side and each side has a small hole for a vacuum line. This car only had it on one side. But, it ran before this way and hardly think a small leak would not allow it to start.
Thanks for the response.
Just to be sure your crank sensor didn't crap the bed, check your tach while cranking and the needle should be bouncing, if not moving then crank sensor is needed.
Did you by chance have the crank sensor and cam sensor both disconnected at the same time?
Believe it or not, they will each plug into the wrong sensor. They are indeed color coded by Porsche, but with a layer of road filth, the color coding is not always noticeable.
OK, I just put the car back together, again, and cranked the engine. The tach is dead. No movement. So, ordering a new crank position sensor should solve the issue? Just want to be sure before I order.
Thanks for the "spot on" info. I would have never thought of that. "Porschetech3", I never touched either the crank or cam sensor so I was confident, no wires were crossed. Just AOS related things. Thanks for the input.
Thanks all...
Yea, very strange. No warning and exactly the same time as an AOS swap. I ordered the new sensor today and expedited shipping so should have it Wednesday. Update will be coming.
Thanks to all the contributors.
OK, first of all, order the new crank sensor, got it two days later and didn't match the original. (Photo). I set up a return and ordered another that had the photo match. The website confirmed the first one would fit this car and only refunded the price of the part and not the $29.99 expedited shipping. I emailed them and they responded that I should have read where it says for "manual transmission". I took photos of the 3 pedals and the shift **** and sent it to them. Then, they admitted their website had an error in it. I should be getting my shipping cost back now. Anyway, new part arrived today, installed and the car fired right up.
You guys are geniuses. I would have never thought of a crank sensor that would stop it from starting. Thanks all that responded.
