The tube was broken in the bend so he had a bit of a time to patch it up again, but he used some saw blade material and got the wires running again inside.

2) Does the roof switch need to be adjusted (the one that is connected with the guide tube)?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi! So a bit of history first: in spring of 2022, the 996 that I bought had a non functioning Targa, where one side was not closed, other side was closed. So in summer 2022 I disconnected the cables, pushed the targa top closed and drove the rest of the season without a targa. Fast forward to 2023 spring. I opened up the targa mechanism and discovered that the tube for the guide wires was broken and the teeth inside the two motors were broken. For the teeth I did some research and found out them to be exactly the same as in a Nissan Altima L31. So that saved a bunch of money from getting new motors from the dealers. For the broken tube, I had them patched up by a local welder. The tube was broken in the bend so he had a bit of a time to patch it up again, but he used some saw blade material and got the wires running again inside. I got the targa top to move open and close at the summer of 2023, but then the summer ended and I did not use it anymore. Fast forward again to spring 2024. I tried to use the targa, but nothing happened. The targa only closes, it does not open up! I went a little bit deeper in the schematic of the glass hatch and discovered that somebody had twisted together two wires that were coming out of a switch for tha glass hatch. The only issue is that the switches are NC, meaning that this switch never opened, meaning that the targa roof would never open up either, because it thought that the glass hatch was open. Well, I opened up the wires, put some wiring tape to separate the wires and put some tape on the switch, to keep it constantly engaged. And hey presto! the roof now works. Opens AND closes. Fast forward again to the beginning of August (yesterday, 08.08.2024) to be exact. I went for a drive to get the oil hot and ready for an oil change. I decided that hey, it's a pretty day and I will open up the targa roof. Thought-done! Now I noticed that some heavy rain clouds are on the horizon and I wanted to close the targa roof. The roof moved about half way closed, then stopped. Tried again by opening up a little and then closing. Again, the same amount of closure. I tried it a couple of times, even helping with my hand, but nothing. Then I tried fiddling with it a little bit more and then finally, for my relief it started to close, but in about 3-5 cm steps at a time. Now after the oil change I thought about tackling the targa roof issue again at my local indepent shop (well, actually at my dads place but as they say the apple does not fall far from the tree) and I could here some weird click-grinding noise, like a something is grinding in the guide groove. I did the foolish thing and added some lubrication to the guide grooves, that did not do anything. Previously there has been no lubrication added to the grooves or to any part of the system during my ownership. My few questions: 1) Does the roof now need to be calibrated with porsche diagnostics software? Does it stop because the motors get overtorqued? 2) Does the roof switch need to be adjusted (the one that is connected with the guide tube)? What is its purpose? 3) Could it be that a pad in the guide rail is broken? 3.1) I have the bentley publishers book, but the part about the targa system is really a big joke (the actual reason why I bought the book, but used it for other stuff too). Any reasonable pictures of how to take apart the system to DIY refurbish over the winter? Can and know how to hold a wrench
