The next day at home, massive misfire and replaced all the coils and plugs.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Curious, what are the longest road trips you have taken?
Most miles in a day?
Total Mileage on car (ex. 25k, 75k)
Thanks.
Me: approx 200 with a 70k car. Im thinking this is nothing compared to what others have done.
Longest was the day purchased from Nashville TN to OH (about 530 miles) when it had 23k miles 5 years ago. After that used to drive it to see family on the weekends between Cleveland and Metro Detroit (~220 miles).
Now trips are much shorter, generally 10-30 on the weekends, and much more few and far between.
Last summer I drove from DC to Hudson NY taking the long route there. Close to 400 miles. When I just got the car with 77k miles I drove it to DC from Tampa over 2 days. They're awesome road trip cars.
We have made several trips in the 250 mile total. We will be doing another one next week. We find our C4S, 41,xxx miles on the clock, comfortable for the 3-4 hour time period of these trips. We've owned the car since last November so winter has limited our trips so far.
176k on my '99, and I have just (last month) done 1200 miles over a long weekend. no worries. though admittedly i have only owned the car for a short time
2017 Chicago to phila and back. 1600 mile round-trip in GT3 seats. Very comfortable believe it or not. PA turnpike thru Pittsburgh was an absolute blast.
Plan on doing it again this summer.
Then: 51k miles
Now: 57k miles
So far, my longest is about 500 miles getting across WA with some stops. I have done about 3 other 300ish mile trips. And at the end of the month I will be doing Tacoma to New Orleans in 3 days, which will be about 850 per day. My car has about 140k on it, less on the rebuilt engine. The car has been very well maintained and is my daily driver and I expect it to be a fun, trouble free trip, aside from having my cat with me.
June of '14 I bought a 28k mile 02C2 at the Exchange (Highland Park IL) and drove straight through to greater DC, 730 miles away. It was a blast. I used the hilarious PCM nav. I listened Beck's superlative 'Morning Phase' album for the first time. I encountered a McD's bathroom near Gary IN so filthy that I went in some nearby bushes instead. Wholly unnecessary 3rd and 4th gear pulls to hear the PSE-- so, I take back the "wholly unnecessary" part.
It has around 65k on it now, much more in 150-mile days than great escapes like that first one. But thanks for reminding me of a truly great day! Time to make another...
875 miles, NYC to ATL, at 85k miles on the car and 2 weeks after I got it. 2000 ME. Engine bought it at 88.5k miles, after also completing the return trip over a few days (via Ft Knox).
99 C4 with 190 000 km. Had it for 4 years. Have put on 15 000 km on every year since ownership. Longest trip in a single day is 700 km. Over that weekend is 1500 km.
Be careful, there are a lot of hippies on this forum. Asking them about their "longest trip" could get you some interesting responses. I'm sure some of them have taken their cars to the moon and back if you get my drift.
I would trust mine to get me cross country BUT there are some interior rattles that, coupled with wind/tire noise, would drive me insane on a long trip. Its not exactly a quiet car for cruising in.
Bought my car in California at 60,000 miles and drove it home to NJ in four days. Longest leg was Nashville to NJ in one day (because we liked Nashville so much), 875 miles. I didn't really worry much about it, maybe I was naive.
I drove my 2k 996 with 110k on the clock from the SF bay area to vancouver Island and back with my 8 year old as passenger. Was a really great road trip! Zero issues with the car.
Total was around 2200 miles
When I bought mine, it was on the other side of Houston so the drive home was 77 miles. (50K miles at the time)
I hadn't driven a manual transmission in years, so it was a fun, but stressful drive home.
I daily drove it 52 miles every week day for a little over 2 1/2 years and then COVID hit.
Since then it's normally 25-30 miles per weekend...about 1 or 2 weekends per month.
I took 1 "long" trip back in 2020 during COVID with my son as copilot and another Rennlister in his 996, and a coworker in his Mustang GT.
That was just 121 miles though.
We went down to the coast and back.
Now it's got 85K miles.
I wouldn't hesitate to drive it long distance.
My road warrior days are over. Five hours of driving is about my max and that's with a leisurely lunch in the middle to break it up. When I do Monterey Car Week, we stop for lunch in Malibu and then continue on to SLO or Morro Bay for the night. The next day is just a chip shot driving-wise.
Thats why I try not to mention that my 99 came with a LSD.
Longest drive was the day I bought it.
300 miles from Porsche Nashua to my house in the Philadelphia suburbs.
Got pulled over as in Massachusetts
I think there should be more variables. Seat time is more important than pure miles covered in my opinion. Also what kinds of roads are we talking about?
I just did ~1500 miles over 5 days in my Z4MC; it could have been fewer miles and fewer days, but I chose to take interesting roads vs droning down I-whatever trying to dodge sleep deprived underpaid long haul truckers. I planned for about 5-6 hours of seat time per day but wound up doing 7-ish twice. I only really felt glad to get out of the car after I ended up doing 3 hours on interstates to get to my destination at a decent hour.
The targa is still on the lift but I am really itching to do something similar with it.
Last summer my wife and I took a road trip out to Denver and back with some spirited drives in Denver.
Day 1 was Spokane to Sheridan, WY ~700 mi
Day 2 Sheridan to southern Denver ~450 mi
The way back was Vail to Bozeman ~700 mi
Then Bozeman to Spokane ~400 mi
Our car started the trip at ~150k miles. Went without a problem the whole way, AC and cruise at 120+ through MT.
My longest and first meeting with my car. January 12 2021, 1300 miles in 22 hours. I was surprised how comfortable it was. I also got to practice driving a stick. I sold my M635CSI in 2015 and almost never in those 6 years drove a stick. Now I drive this car maybe 2 days a week. Car is sitting now at 99750 miles. Ill be braking that record the 996 turbo I bought is 1550 miles away in riviera California.
My car had 135k mi. when I bought it in Illinois (just outside Chicago). Drove it home to Long Island (east end) the following day(s- brief overnight stay) around 950 miles
2004 picked up my new C4S cab at Raleigh NC delaer... 1023 miles back to Key West stopped at a motel but too wired to sleep back on the road at daybreak.
Last summer I put 11,000 miles on my 2003 C4S (125k miles at the start) over a 4-month period. Roughly did this route, which included almost all of the Pacific Coast Highway and Route 66. Got an oil change half-way through while we were in LA
Longest single-day stretches were around 500 miles:
- Minneapolis, MN to Badlands National Park, SD
- Keyhole State Park, WY to Jackson, WY
- Oklahoma City, OK to St Louis, MO
I did about 800 miles one day, bought the car in Alabama, drove it to New York, it has about 95k miles. I got lucky, there was some rain and got a tiny bit of misfire. The next day at home, massive misfire and replaced all the coils and plugs. could of been stuck on the side of the road.
Only a couple hundred miles, because we really haven't had any occasion to go anywhere. Less distance but several hours getting to or participating in a couple of PCA events.
One of the issues I had was fitting my larger frame into sport seats - but I'm down 30 lbs since Superbowl Sunday (well, Monday morning after), and the seats get more comfortable each time I get in the car.
With another 30 to go, imagine the overall impact on my power:weight ratio? I can really take advantage of the 3.6 to 3.8l conversion then!
Being a cab, the noise can get tiresome on long expressway drives especially with a lot of traffic. On the secondary roads though, that's less of an issue (and I can always put the hard top on).
I've done long days on sport bikes, so I could spend all day driving my car just as easily as in any other vehicle. I just need a trip to go on!

750 miles in one day (Fort Lauderdale FL - Helen GA) in my C4S with 60K miles. No a single hick up during or after the trip and quite comfortable actually
In May of 2020, I drove from Olympia, Washington to Pinecrest Lake in CA near Yosemite. About 850 miles in one day. Two days later I drove back in one day. My C4 had about 155K on her at the time. No issues. It was more comfortable than I thought it would be.
I have owned my 1999 C2 for less than 4 months and since that time I picked it up in Syracuse where it had 53K miles, and have driven it nearly 100 miles a day since. Just returned from a road trip from Cleveland to Philadelphia (470 miles) and she is still purring!

Drove from Washington D.C. to Key West Fl about eight years ago when we moved here. 1,200 miles over three days. Took our time keeping as close to the coast as possible. The car had about 100,000 on the odometer then but as Porsche had graciously given me a brand spanking new and complete engine at 59k, it wasn't much of a test. p.s. Always buy that fifth year of warranty.
Regularly drive the 04 996 between raleigh Nc and s.fl 764 miles each way. Longest trip was s.fl to northern Virginia at 1100 miles. Like others have said it is a great road trip car. Some of my best moments with my son have been us taking road trips in the car. Will make the same run in July with him in the 03 turbo this time because he description of the turbo always kills me…..he says to me …dad…the best way to describe the turbo vs non turbo 996 is “ it’s like the regular 996 had an evil and very angry baby that always wants to go faster “

OOh! I like this game!
When I bought my C2, it had about 85,000 miles on it. I drove it from Dallas to Minneapolis - about 1,000 miles over two days. My first stop was In-N-Out Burger.
Two weeks from now, Im going to embark on a 4,000 mile road trip. The car is currently at about 90,000 miles. Wish me luck!!!!
My longest trip was about 720 miles, down to Charlestown SC area back to North East Ohio when purchasing my car from the original owner. Went down 1 day before, drove straight home early the next day into the evening hours (so it became a 2 day journey). Incredibly fun drive coming back north near the Hills of PA and Ohio on the twisties. Extremely comfortable, reliable and enjoyable. Car was early in its life at the time- probably around 35k miles. Currently sitting around 71k many years later.
Flew to Colorado Springs last month to buy my 03 996 and drive it back to OH 1,900 miles in 2.5 days. Sport seats rocked
03 aero x51 hard back sport seats etc etc
Ok...
let's try a NEW game. What is your shortest trip in your Porsche?
I'll start...
Me, "Hunni, I'll go get the car started for our date and get the heated seat warmed up for you. ((winks))"
Wife responds, "Ok babe, I'll be out in a minute"
(Jump and do a heel click... slide into the Porsche, grip the steering wheel like you're about to enter a race, you look around nodding your head in affirmation, smell the leather, turn on the ignition to Postion 1 - Oil is good. Turn the car on and roars in Porsche style. Lights are lit... all gauges look bright and happy. "Ahhhh... it's going to be a Goooooood night!" You look over to the nosey neighbor and say, "Aint no substitution beeotch!" hahahaha)
BUT THEN!!!
Wife walks out and into the garage, rolls her eyes, and says, "Uh, I ain't riding in that thing! I want to be comfortable."
Me... Shrugs shoulders, reluctantly turns off the Porsche, sighs disappointment, and gets in the big SUV.
Wife happy. Thinks about food... I'm happy again.
0 miles on the Porsche.
We did a group drive recently with close friends, traveled 2100km (1305 miles) in 4 days. It was an epic drive, C2 performed flawlessly, what a great car.
In my 996 Turbo we did 1100 km in one day
135K mi car. Monterey to LA, along the coast Big Sur, etc. Great drive, ran strong, top down.
Love driving it. Just really love the "go cart" narrow body feel.
Albany to Key Largo 1476 miles in 22.5 hours . Next continue to Key West! Another 98 miles. 1 week later drove straight back so 1574 miles total 3050 miles in 1 week! I'll never do that again! I did a similar trip in my Macan S last September but stopped to sleep each way! I also had my gal and she insisted on stopping.
602 miles on 2nd leg in the GT3 when I was road tripping it back home (Louisville to Los Angeles):

If you like interstates I guess you're right. I like having a nice cruise to the northern end of the run, getting on the train, having a nice(ish) dinner, waking up in FL, and continuing my nice cruise.
Maybe if you take 4 or 5 days to do the run you could make it an enjoyable drive. I would not knock that one bit, as between me and FL there are some of the best driving roads in America. But if I just want to be in FL the Auto Train is kickass.
