Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace bearing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect oil filter each' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If they replace the engine, they replacement engines have the 'non-servicable' IMS bearing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Today the IMS Bearing in my 2003 996 Targa failed. The dealer gave me supporting documents showing tthat the IMS Bearing had been replaced. Less than 90 days after purchasing this vehicle it (IMS BEARING) gastictopiclly failed.
How much damage to the motor?
What was your driving style? Aggressive hitting redline often ? Take it easy seldom over 5k rpm etc?
Its a machine all can be fixed
The previous bearing probably failed and they just slapped a new bearing in it and called it good
The debris in the motor from the previous failed bearing killed the new bearing
Sorry for your loss, time for a factory long block or LS3?
Well that is a real Bi7(h!!!
Clearly not all replacement bearings are the same. What type did they put in? The '03 originals were the worst year. Hopefully there is some recourse for you. If they replace the engine, they replacement engines have the 'non-servicable' IMS bearing. It is the same one used in the late '05's through '08 in 997's (987 Cayman and Boxster too).
Hopefully you have a lemon law or something that gives you a way to recover. Sorry to hear that!
Good luck with that
You drove it for almost 3 months
Used cars are sold “as-is”
Sorry to be a debi downer, but you will have a huge up hill battle with the dealer
They will tell you to pound sand, you own it
If you bought it from a dealer you have rights, my engine blew up 30 days after purchase, I won the court case under consumer rights act, car needs to be fit for purpose for first 6 months,
Look it up. Took me a year but I won 9.2k repair bill. Getting money off them is another story.... I have a court case for his payment plan coming up soon.
Today, when the IMS bearing is replaced, the independent or dealer puts a sticker inside the door jamb stating the date of the upgrade. That might help in sorting out what can be done.
Sorry for the trouble. Good luck. It can happen to any of us.
I am driving my very 1st Porsche. 2000 996 Carrera w/ tiptronic tranny. This IMS thing has caused some anguish. Bought my 911 3yrs ago with 13k mileage. Now have a little over 40K miles. Just did fourth oil change and found no metal shavings on the magnetic oil sump plug. Should I be worried?
Increase your oil change frequency to every 4000 miles. Inspect the oil filter each change for shiny bits. If the IMS has never been changed you can install an upgraded bearing now and every 50k miles. These basic maintenance steps are likely to avoid catastrophic failure and a lost motor.
It is well known that only three percent of the 911's from 1999 on had IMS failures.
I bought mine used and worried about the bearing failure. I just drove it knowing 3% would fail and I am not one of them.
I eventually had the clutch replaced and they upgraded the bearing.
94K and the car is like new.
I own a 2003 996 Targa, about 24,000 miles on the car. Original bearing in place.
-going to change the IMS soon: Trying to decide between LN Engineering: Retrofit vs Solution.
-Retrofit suggested life span is 6 yrs/75,00 miles. My driving milage will never hit 75,000 miles in 6 yrs.
-any thoughts from those who have changed the bearing and which did you choose to go with.
Thanks to all.

Thanks to all.
The issue with IMS is lack of lubrication, make sure you go with the one with direct lubrication feed to the IMS (if that is possible with the type of bearing you have, single row vs double row)

i bought my 1999 (03/98) C2 with 171k, docs showing the ORIGINAL IMS was swapped out at 148k, for an LNE along with a stock clutch and the 4th RMS.. today, rolling strong at about to turn 193k.
YMMV..
