The engine does not appear that hot and water appears to be circulating as pipes are warm and I have checked used a infra red spot temp sensor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a manual C4S that's recently showing strange symptoms. My temperature doesn't go all the way to 80 but instead stays half way between 50 and 80 which I'm guessing is around 70. I thought that maybe it's my thermostat but my heating is warm right from cold start. Today I tried to lift the bleed valve on the expansion tank as I thought maybe there's an air leak but 5 miles down the road my te.p went to 0 and I got a temp gauge error with a slow flashing red light. I closed the valve and the temp eventually shot up to 80 before dropping down to 70 again. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Temp sensor?

I forgot to add, coolant level is fine.

POST 3Original post

On a tiptronic car there is a seperate cooler for the gearbox oil .. if the valve that controls this fails .. it stays open then we have the symptoms you describe ... it over cools . Obviously you have a manual and not a GT3 which has the same system so its not this .. but it does lead me to believe your car is over cooling .. An electrical issue with the temp sensor .. its kinda permanent .. the ECU looking at oil vs coolant temp will after a while say .. ok this isn't right .. coolant is far to cold .. there is an issue and it shuts down the reading to warn you . With all i've said .. i'm not 100 % but it feels to me like the thermostat might be slightly stuck open giving an over cooling of the coolant .. on this scenario .. Stationary and at idle .. say 10 mins .. you will have 80 degrees on the gauge .. not the correct temp as the gauge under and over reads .. basically Porsche hold it at 80 give or plus 5 degrees .. but you will see 80 .. Anyways .. idle at 80 .. you drive the car and it drops to 70 .. over cooling imho . bear in mind .. hot air from 70 or 80 are going to be the same .. the air temp is regulated at say 22 degrees .. it wont blow out 70 degrees .

I did a test to see what the display shows against actual temperature. You can see the results in this video. MC

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've managed to sort the issue out - turns out it was the coolant temperature sensor. Now I am getting the dial right in the middle of the 0 next to 8 when warmed up to temp.

hi Having watched your video with interest I hope you could provide some advice. I have a 996 c4 having issues with a tempersture gauge reading excessively high in excess of 100 c after a very short period of running . The engine does not appear that hot and water appears to be circulating as pipes are warm and I have checked used a infra red spot temp sensor. I have replaced the 4 pin sensor with new porsche one but the issue remains. I now suspect either the wiring or a faulty gauge/ instrument? I understand the sensor is supplied 5 v then returns to the gauge? would a broken wire or fauly connector or gauge give high readings? Any help or advice appreciated. kind Regards Dave
