Thanks for the suggestions - the mechanic did check the OBDII codes on a generic reader and it didn't come up with anything, but I have Durametric so will hook that up and see if it has anything more detailed.

Was hoping to pick the forum's brains about a fault the car developed yesterday - the car had an injector upgrade a few months back and has barely been used since, but has been kept on a trickle charger and when it has been driven it's had absolutely no problems.

Now this advice is obvious, and I don't know how easy it is on your model, but you could disconnect a fuel pipe somewhere and check there is some flow.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I took a look at the fuel pump relay and I think I got the right one and swapped it with an identical one next door to it on the relay board, no change.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Was hoping to pick the forum's brains about a fault the car developed yesterday - the car had an injector upgrade a few months back and has barely been used since, but has been kept on a trickle charger and when it has been driven it's had absolutely no problems. The car has been kept outside and last night we had some very heavy rain, but it was only lightly raining when I started it up in the morning and let it idle for a couple of minutes - started well and idled perfectly. I then put it in reverse and started to move and the car spluttered and died. I tried to restart and it would turnover strongly, but wouldn't fire. Called out my breakdown cover guy and he had a look around, checked fuses, hooked up a power pack just in case and had me turn it over whilst he sprayed easy start into the intake, it would start, but would immediately die as soon as the spray stopped, regardless of throttle. Mechanic said he could hear the fuel pump working (from the back of the car?). I just came back to it several hours later and tried it (after being on charge) - will turn over strongly, but not fire. So, do you have any ideas what the problem could be or where I should start looking?! I took a look at the fuel pump relay and I think I got the right one and swapped it with an identical one next door to it on the relay board, no change. I'm not convinced it's not the fuel pump itself, should there be a distinctive noise from it on pre-ignition and turnover? There are quite a few noises around the car on start up, but I can't hear a specific noise from the pump, even with all the covers off and me standing by it. The mechanic did say he was confident it wasn't the pump though?

POST 2Original post

Hmm. If you have no faults coming up, and the easy-start let the car run, then it does sound like fuel. Just because the pump is running doesn't mean fuel is getting to the engine. You should be able to hear the pump run and come up to pressure without trying to start the car. Now this advice is obvious, and I don't know how easy it is on your model, but you could disconnect a fuel pipe somewhere and check there is some flow. You don't need to turn the engine, having the ignition on should run the pump and get the fuel up to pressure. Be careful as if all is ok you will get a lot of fuel flowing! Perhaps best done as a 2 person job.

POST 3Original post

Just spotted the 'injector upgrade' line. You can't help thinking that is suspicious, something could have become unattached, blocked or failed. Maybe check you have enough fuel (gauges can lie), then give whoever did the upgrade a poke.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the suggestions - the mechanic did check the OBDII codes on a generic reader and it didn't come up with anything, but I have Durametric so will hook that up and see if it has anything more detailed. I agree the injectors being recently changed does suggest it would be them, but would all 6 fail to inject at the same time? Apart from that, how would I check to see the pump is actually pumping fuel?

POST 6Original post

Clogged filter? How old is your fuel and how much of it is left?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 2698404

I don't think you will see any codes if it is working but not working well enough. You definitely have enough fuel in the tank? All six injectors isn't the point, they may not even acticvate if the fuel pressure isn't high enough. You can short the fuel pump solenoid to force the pump to run, but really you should be able to hear it whine a little when you first activate the ignition. If you can't do this, disconnecting the pipe will tell you quickly enough if fuel is flowing.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2698414

Thanks, but fuel pump was changed about 4 years and 10,000 miles ago. Full tank of fuel in the car.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2698420

Thanks - there are definitely noises coming from the fuel pump area on start up, but I was expecting a kind of whine noise, not clunking and whirring, if you see what I mean? Maybe I can video it to see if people think the pump is working? What's downstream of the pump - is it just fuel hose, fuel pressure regulator, fuel bars, injectors? Just thinking if there's something else electrical downstream that may have failed? Earliest I can get it into the garage is mid-August, so ideally would like to get it at least diagnosed, if not fixed before then.
