Suggestion · Original poster

I had been experiencing a slight misfire/hesitation around 3000 rpm which I had been chasing for a while by replacing the O2 sensors, MAF sensor and crank position sensor but to no avail; however, following the MOT I thought the cats might be the problem (being 26 years old!).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So following my recent MOT where my car just scraped through on emissions I thought I should do something about it. I had been experiencing a slight misfire/hesitation around 3000 rpm which I had been chasing for a while by replacing the O2 sensors, MAF sensor and crank position sensor but to no avail; however, following the MOT I thought the cats might be the problem (being 26 years old!). I started looking around at the various options and being conscious that the quality/authenticity of online parts can be somewhat dubious at times. I've used www.partsinmotion.co.uk a couple of times with great service and they have been really competitive price wise, so looking on their website they have new cats that are UK manufactured by BM Catalysts (Europe's leading manufacturer apparently) listed for just £204.41 each. I took the plunge on the cheap option and by buying 2 cats I also got a £10 discount so £398.82 total including next day delivery. You will need 2 cat bungs if you have an early 2no O2 sensor car link me and these cats specifically say they should not be fitted to 2001 onward cars. Following fitting I feel like the car has a new lease on life and revs so much more freely.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah all coil packs and plugs replaced fairly recently.

POST 4Original post

Have a look down the exhaust manifold end of the old cats, would be interesting to know if there's any sign of the cat brick breaking up or blocking?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 2698250

Would be interested to see this too. Sounds like a good deal on the cats, though!

POST 6Original post

We bought these type of BM cats too. They seem to work OK, having passed a couple of MOT's now. Beware though, they are supposed to be stainless steel, but in no time they will go rusty. So, not really very stainless !

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 2698502

Will be 304 not 316. Same with fasteners, use marine grade A4, not the cheaper A2. Not all stainless is the same quality.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2698250

On the face of it they don't look that bad but are clearly shot.

POST 9Original post

No, if I looked at those I wouldn't think they were done. But clearly a well judged replacement based on the symptoms!
