After reading a bit about the clutch assist spring, I poked my head in and saw that it was still there, and didn't think much more about it over the last couple years, and figured that it could be the pressure plate going and figured I would eventually need to replace the clutch.

I want the spring back, but don't need to replace the whole thing, so I'm looking for a replacement spring locally.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had my car for 3 years now (02 Targa) and the clutch has always operated flawlessly, but has been very heavy. After reading a bit about the clutch assist spring, I poked my head in and saw that it was still there, and didn't think much more about it over the last couple years, and figured that it could be the pressure plate going and figured I would eventually need to replace the clutch. I was upside down underneath the dash last night replacing the ignition switch, and got curious and pulled the assist spring out and found the spring broken in 3 pieces. The clutch feels no different with the whole spring housing removed than it did before. Turns out I had the clutch mod and didn't know it, and I don't love it. I want the spring back, but don't need to replace the whole thing, so I'm looking for a replacement spring locally. (The springs from Home Depot that folks mention is way too light) Two questions - 1) Does anyone know where I can get one of the OE spec springs? and 2) Is there a trick to getting this thing back in the car? Removing it was a bit tricky, but playing with it last night trying to get it back in proved to be almost impossible. It seems that you need to have one person slowly modulating the clutch while you try to fit the unit back in, then get the pin back in, all while upside down in the wheel well... TIA... M
