Ok, I have read that some Porsche owners that own 996's with the PSM option have done brake flushing without out the use of a PC based diagnostic tool to activate the electronics in the braking system, some state it is also necessary to use the diagnostic software?

For cars with traction control or Porsche Stability Management (PSM), you need to use the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) in order to activate the valves in the hydraulic unit during the bleeding process.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can you change brake fluid the old fashion way of pumping the pedal and holding it down when you have psm OR DO YOU NEED THE pst2 in order to activate the valves during brake bleeding
For cars with traction control or Porsche Stability Management (PSM), you need to use the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2) in order to activate the valves in the hydraulic unit during the bleeding process. If your car has a "PSM off" switch on the dashboard, then you will need to go to a shop that has a PST2 so that the brake system can be bled properly.
A lot of people on forums say you can bleed it old fashion way but it does change the fluid in the pump. Some people even say some garages don't bleed it the proper way
I based my response on Wayne's diy tech article - other members will likely chime in with their expertise as well.

I have ordered the Durametric cable for my 2002 996 Carrera along with a refurbished laptop off of EBay for the purpose of working on the car and was told by the folks at Durametric that this is one of the functions that the program can provide. What is actually being turned ON during the flushing event using a software diagnostic tool such as Durametric?

As Loren noted, cycling the ABS/ PSM systems is only required if you have replaced major components in the ABS or PSM system, or gotten air into them; otherwise it is not necessary. Even dealerships do not cycle these systems during a flush unless specifically needed.
Just purchased a Sealey VS820 Brake and Clutch Bleeding System.
Will this do the job,
o you still need pst2 in order to activate the valves during brake bleeding
