I have replaced the 4 pin sensor with new porsche one but the issue remains.

The engine does not appear that hot and water appears to be circulating as pipes are warm and I have checked used a infra red spot temp sensor.

. I have a 996 c4 having issues with a tempersture gauge reading excessively high in excess of 100 c after a very short period of running . The engine does not appear that hot and water appears to be circulating as pipes are warm and I have checked used a infra red spot temp sensor. I have replaced the 4 pin sensor with new porsche one but the issue remains. I now suspect either the wiring or a faulty gauge/ instrument? I understand the sensor is supplied 5 v then returns to the gauge? would a broken wire or fauly connector or gauge give high readings? Any help or advice appreciated. kind Regards Dave

Have you checked that both fans work on both speeds? When mine did this, the nearside front wasn't working on high speed. Turning on AC and off should activate and de-activate the high speed on both sides even when the engine is cold.

Above 100°C (i.e. the bar after 80) does seem high. How short a period of running are we talking about? Have you checked whether the fans work? And did you clean your radiators? I wonder how easy it would be to add a water temp gauge in the circuit to get a 2nd reading.
