Strange to have the PPF fitted only a few weeks ago and then sell the car!

Also noticed they have still not fixed the rear passenger buckled wheel, that to me screams a dealer just interested in making a profit and not actually selling a quality car, otherwise they would have had that wheel repaired/replaced the moment they took the car into stock.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Maybe to do with lubricants being silicon based or not. Ive read that Krytox 105 is more suitable as it soaks into the rubber more readily. I've ordered some Gummi to start with `thanks.
I have been following the excitement that has been generated from the release of the Gt4rs. I fully understand the ethos of the GT4RS and the race series of the CS version. I understand that a Spyder RS is also planned. Do you think that this will result in the current spyder becoming more available. I tried every uk OPC in September to see if they would allow me to order a Spyder and none would. I did manage to get a 25th and im more than happy with that but would really like to get into a new Spyder at some point if at all possible.
I see my old 981 Spyder has now found its way to OPC Portsmouth.......
Amazing to see the travels of your old car as it's passed around the trade & online auctions.....
I sold it through motorway.co.uk back in July for what was I believe very strong money. The highest trade bidder (specialist independent dealer) collected the car and it was immediately advertised for strong money reflecting the cars very high spec, low mileage and perfect condition. After a month / 6 weeks there were a couple of price adjustments before it disappeared from their website presumably sold. Then it was listed on collecting cars presumably by the initial specialist (same location) but failed to hit reserve and was therefore unsold @ £68,000...
Same specialist trader then re-advertised for £75,990 (coincidentally a lump less than I sold it to them for!) and it once again disappeared from their website presumably sold....
Now, a week later its appeared on Porsche used car listings at OPC Portsmouth @ £84,990 - complete with 2 year warranty and all the benefits of buying directly from an OPC.
Not just saying this because it was my car but it really is perfect, has amazing spec with all the best options and with its low mileage and cherished owners you won't find a better 981 Spyder.
Noticed my old Spyder sold recently -

I did the same, sold my 981 spyder to trade and still for sale at OPC Wolverhampton albeit £4K lower since they advertised it at the end of August. I’ve a 987 spyder now.
How is the 987 experience after the 981? Why did you want to go back to the 987? My 987 Spyder experience is fairly limited - to a week’s test drive years ago on launch.
I sold my 981 Spyder this autumn to WBAC as I felt the price was strong and wasn’t using it so much, with a view to being in cash to perhaps pick up a 458 spider at some point in the future. The steering feel and leggy gear ratios were the main negative of the 981.
I was surprised to see it then pop up for just £7k more than I sold it for at an OPC. I loved it, particularly the euro trips I did in it, but I do not miss it at all yet. Maybe that will come over the years… Equally I’d happily have another!
It will have had a service, warranty with Porsche etc so not a huge margin for a business of that size in my view. Made me feel that I got a fair deal.
WBAC was so painless to sell to, and great not to have to listen to an OPC tell you how it’s worth less because it’s missing x or y option!
CAT D 987.2 Spyder is back on the market (same dealer):
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202111209...
See they have removed the nasty front-end wrap it had and increased the price from 38k to 40k.
Also noticed they have still not fixed the rear passenger buckled wheel, that to me screams a dealer just interested in making a profit and not actually selling a quality car, otherwise they would have had that wheel repaired/replaced the moment they took the car into stock.
Shabby nasty example, 32k at best for that car!

The left side of that wheel does look square!
"How is the 987 experience after the 981? Why did you want to go back to the 987? My 987 Spyder experience is fairly limited - to a week’s test drive years ago on launch."
In my case - previously posted on another forum :
Having previously had both a 987 then a 981 Spyder, both of which have been missed, I decided it was time to return to the fold. For me personally it had to be the 987 to now keep long term, it just has that extra bit or character, nicer steering, less annoying roof design re boot opening, and a few other things, all IMO of course.
Now for the spec, purists should really look away now !!
It's pretty much the full heavyweight version with PDK, sports heated seats, full leather, and nav, - it does have the right wheels though. Other options include sports chrono, dials in white, seat backs and roll bars in white, plus the all important sports exhaust. Mileage around 15k, with 3 previous owners, and fairly immaculate really.
It's my perfect spec going into older-ish age now with keeping it long term in mind. The transmission wasn't the decider but I quite like PDK, I have other cars with buckets, a bit less keen on them now than I used to be anyway, and the missus likes heated seats.
So there you have it my perfect Spyder, probably the heaviest and in many eyes the least driver focused spec around, but I love it and really just don't care
I didnt realise there was a new thread here. Even so it still seems a bit quiet in here. This red car at Ashgoods has been mentioned in the Cayman R thread. Anyone know the car? Looks like it had Porsche in Red across the front window when it arrived but now removed.

Yep, seen the Ashgoods car when I collected my Spyder from them in July.
It was at £55k when it first went up, I think it sold for just under £50k then came back up for sale soon after, no idea what the reason was.
It is immaculate. The only thing for me is it doesn't have the leather dash, which does make the interior a bit more plush.

I think it was purchased by someone that didn't live in the UK at the time... for him to do a Euro tour and then sold back to Ashgoods. Something like that anyway.

Sorry Andyoz, you may be confusing this red Spyder with me. I am the foreign guy that bought an Ashgood Spyder for touring UK and Europe etc.
It is a white one and I still own it.
This red one was purchased and shortly after purchase, it was back at Ashgood.
I have no clue why ?
Just wanted to help here, thanks !

Andy is right. I was at Ashgoods recently and was told the red car was bought solely for a trip in to Europe (an Italian chap I believe) then given back to Ashgoods to re-sell. No idea why it is still there.
I love my Cayman R but I was looking for a Spyder at the time and still hanker after one
If I was in the market, I'd be buying the one at Cameron Sports Cars. Sorely tempted to enquire PX
Is it right that the CR makes more noise because the exhaust (PSE) is wider section? thx

Yeah, the R got 55mm diameter but the Spyder kept the normal 48mm diameter from the S for some reason.

Ah cool, after reading @Champs post I doubted myself but yeah the two cars were sold around the same time. Was probably a post from Tom that I read somewhere where he mentioned the short term buyer of the red one....I think that car sticks in people's minds as it was listed at £55k at the height of the 2021 mania.

Classic example of a manufacturer making exactly what the ‘purists’ ask for then nobody wants it.
The Lotus crowd do the same thing, saying all the time they want a stripped out version and then go and add AC, sound deadening, radio etc etc. when they spec it

I got an Exige but it had to have AC, carpets and radio.
We all like lightweight cars, but when its a car you drive on the road generally all of us want some creature comforts such as AC, radio, proper seatbelts, heaters etc.
I think its a beautiful Spyder that car but it needs AC and some form of radio end of, otherwise its a hard sale.

I like it more because its poverty spec.
That spyder is my old car.
I purchased it from opc leicester around Nov 2019 and owned for around 18 months. Sold it last May via webuyanycar and its been for sale ever since.
Leicester had that car for sale for ages too. Spec was obvs the issue.
I loved my period of ownership, had a great road trip between lockdowns over the alps. The only thing that worried me was lack of aircon - and that was only once when it rained during our road trip. Otherwise its a car to be driven roof down always.
Lack of stereo was not an issue. easy to retrofit. also i found a bose bluetooth speaker fitted perfectly on the shelf.
Car didnt put a foot wrong. I still miss it.

What did you pay ? £58k?
Ahhhh, remember those days when cars were cheap ….
These cars are among the best fun cars available at under 70k. They punch way above their weight.
The gear change was the best I've ever experienced.
With ceramics the car feels light on its feet, far nicer than spyders I drove without ceramics - unsprung weight etc I guess.
The steering rack (off a 911 turbo iirc) is a huge upgrade over the standard boxsters.
The roof is simplicity in itself, the fact that its manual adds to the whole.

Looking for a 981 Spyder at the moment.
I've seen a yellow one for sale (reg bgz 4383) with 28k. Anyone know anything about it?
Are there are any infamous ones I should know about?
Hi there
I’m finding the headlights in my 987.2 Spyder rubbish, it’s a none xenon model so just regular bulbs I guess.
What is the best dipped bulbs people have used please? Any links for ordering be appreciated.

I don't know anything about that particular car but they do look great in Yellow! I will be selling my Spyder soon (Guards Red, 23k Miles) as a new puppy means I need to go back to a car with rear seats - let me know if you want me to send some more details of the car by private message
This seems very well priced for such a great specification car:
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/12957679
I guess no satnav/radio will put some off but its got AC. If it had ceramics would be an incredible purist spec car, still superb VFM considering its still under Porsche warranty as well and has done at least 1000 miles a year, should be a great driving example.
Does anyone know the history of the car at Porsche Perth?

Any info would be appreciated, as would spec information etc.

As the price would suggest for a 10k mileage car it’s what many would consider a basic spec.
18 way Comforts are liked by many whilst others consider Carbon LWB more in keeping, it’s prob 50/50 on seat choice. Daily drivers seem to prefer 18ways as considered more comfortable by many.
I think it’s fair to say the majority on here prefer and consider a leather/deviated stitching dash more in keeping with what is almost a £70k car. If you are concerned about resale the dash could be a factor.
With ~8 white Spyders on the market at the moment you have plenty of choice with varying options.
Fantastic cars……you won’t be disappointed.
Chaps, what are your thoughts on extending the Porsche warranty (in terms of resale value), my 2016 23k miles car is coming up for renewal in March, been quoted £660 / £1190 for 1 / 2 years?
No plans to sell at the moment and next service not due until June 23.

On a personnel note it would be more attractive to a potential private buyer to have a transferable warranty .and it will give you peace of mind going forward .I believe you no longer have to pay the 111 point check if the warranty is continuous as long as it has had a service or is getting a service .

Good point, I’ve always sold SOR previously, but if I could sell privately due to warranty it would save circa £3k of costs.

I wouldn’t of liked paying a few grand to change the lhs exhaust on mine. I think it’s invaluable personally.
I’ve had a transfer case and exhaust replacement in the last 6 months alone

When they originally bought it from me (august) they had it up at 80k

That is a fair drop in the asking price ,these cars are still selling above the original invoice value ,I recon that car was no more than £64k when new ,But 5 owners is a fair amount but to be fair most owners tend to try it and then sell on .My 981 cost new £65K in March 2015 sold privately 2 years later with 4k miles for £70 K and today will still sell for that 5yrs on .bought at the right price depreciation free motoring.
My 987 Spyder is now 11 yr old and has went up in value over my ownership ,but yet to reach its original values back in 2010/11 off £54k at launch .Some 718 are asking way over the odds seen a few at over £100 k and no way would pay those overs . So the Perth car looks decent value but is lacking a few essentials for me mainly buckets in my mind must haves .

I had an exhaust changed too, because the valve had stopped working, I was surprised they didn’t just try to free the valve up, which is what I would have done if it wasn’t under warranty.

I have this now on my poverty 981 write off. But I just ignore it and drive it. At some point I might get round to attacking it. We'll see. This might be the wrong forum but does anyone make an aftermarket type exhaust with the valves for these cars?

At 59K 18 months ago was a good deal .with the spec would not buy at their asking price maybe a cheeky bid ,but to be fair the 2yr warranty and full service would cost buyers retail £2.2K

Great to see that my old car has finally sold from OPC Portsmouth!
If its anyone on here or you know who has bought it please ask them to get in touch as I have a load of history which I didn't supply with the car when sold to Motorway - most dealers now destroy these documents due to GDPR rules so vital history is often lost. Copies of all service invoices and original purchase receipt etc are available.

Hi The 981 Spyder at OPC Perth is my old car.
Perth are selling it at virtually the price they paid me for it!!
It had a replacement LHS exhaust under warranty and a major service before it went.
Had the car around 14 months and loved every second of it.
When they originally bought it from me (august) they had it up at 80k

Thanks for the information.
I may go to look at it on Monday, is there anything else you know about it that could be relevant please?
Thanks in advance
Tony
Hi Tony,
The car was brilliant, I did think about keeping it, but the offer Perth made me was very strong. Only thing I would of changed is the tyres. They may be due swapping out.
I actually messaged them last week and offered 60k.
The reply was, is that your deposit?

You still in Mortimer Richard?
I've still got mine having met you and the other guy (Can't remember his name) at the Cunning Man in 2012, must be 10 years this month and I can't bring myself to sell mine either. Nothing would touch it in the 40-50k bracket.
I'm the other guy! Still have mine too. Moved to Pangbourne a few years back, so still local
Washed off the winter grime and it reminded me how good these cars look
Did anyone see that RPM sold their white Spyder and the new owner had it colour changed to Oak Green via application of “peelable paint”

Thats a lovely Spyder and I love white.
I'm not so sure your OPC is telling you the truth about white cars. My previous base 718 cayman was on the forecourt for a week then sold for £10 less than I bought it for 20 months earlier, and that was white.
Maybe. But both had no skin in the game as they neither had a white one to sell.
I know of two recent Spyder purchases in white that have both been to Logic for peelable paint colour changes. One of them is above. Both chaps on the Spyder group.
Anyway. Mega cars either way the Spyder
Wondering if this was anyone’s on here?
Rather taken by it, but seems to have been for sale since early August ‘22.
Price too high?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202208108...
Probably a bit toppy price wise seeing similar cars appear within the dealer network similarly priced, with all the checks and warranty that brings - plus end of summer as the interest rates started escalating not the best time to be trying to sell one at a top price
Great spec though - if i am struggling with what the 8k of extras would be on the car, but can't remember what they came with as standard
All I can see is the headlights, and they weren’t that much.
Possibly the white seat inserts too.
PSE about £1500 at the time?
Sport chrono was an option too.
Doesn’t have cup holders though….
I've had 2 of these, one of which is the cheaper one on autotrader at 46k.
I prefer this one due to spec, looks really well imo.
They are difficult sells though, my old one has been for sale for about a year I think!!
In view of this I think its at least a couple of k over what it needs to be to sell at the mo

That £46k one is actually sold. I enquired about it this weekend and had gone. He said that after it being for sale ‘for a while’ he had a few offers in the last week. I would have had it if it was still avail and would have moved down on price 5-10%
I had a new one back in 2011 and quite fancy another.
Doesn’t appear to be any through Porsche dealers at the moment, although I guess at over 10 years old you don’t get the usual used Porsche warranty?
The warranty (available for vehicles up to their 15th year and with a mileage not exceeding 200,000 km/125,000 miles) covers all components of your Porsche for 12, 24 or 36 months, protecting you from unexpected repair costs.

I can spot;
-Painted hoops (not a fan)
-Painted seat inserts
-Bi-Zenon
-PSE
-Sports Chrono
-It’s says the sports shift fitted
-Alcantara pack (handbrake, gear lever, steering wheel), but didn’t go for the extended alcantara that covered the door panels. You could option either one separately.
- Can’t tell 100% if it has the extended leather on dashboard, though I thought you had to do that to have the alcantara options.
Would have to dig out some books for pricing.
Car looks nice though.

Interesting!
That’s quite a leap, especially as a confirmed sold price (I wonder if it includes the premium or that is to go on top also?)
Nicely specced, relatively low miles but nothing spectacular. Can’t see anything which makes it stand out as a prime example of the Spyder.
I have to say, if someone offered me that much, I may have to move it on. Although exchanging the sale price it actually came to £77k.

For the avoidance of doubt and U.K. readers, it was registered in Switzerland and sold in Swiss francs

Two years into ownership so thought we’d do a road trip to Italy.
The car was faultless, made a great touring car for the long journeys and was perfect for the mountain passes and hill runs.
Brilliant sports car.

Sounds a great trip. Big motorway slogs or was it more interesting roads?
I do find it can become a bit tiring when the speeds go up and sat on a motorway. The odd thoughts of a coupe GT slip in.
I’ve always liked the look of my 987 Spyder in white with black wheels, however that does look lovely with them in silver.

Well…..it’s funny you should say that…
The original idea was to do a 10 day trip with multiple stops on the way there and back, however this changed to a week in a villa and road trips in the surrounding hills. This resulted in a two day drive there and back, basically 2k miles on motorways….which was a bit of a pain for sure. Could have just taken the X3 diesel to be honest….
So, it started me thinking about changing the Spyder for something I could use more often when we’re at home, rather than just have a car tucked away all winter for use when it’s sunny…..
So the Spyder is sold and a Cayman GTS has been purchased. Brilliant service from OPC Swindon I have to say. They really worked hard to get me where I wanted to be numbers-wise & I’m really happy with the deal.
I’ll miss the Spyder for all it’s qualities, rareness & fun, but having had a Boxster GTS previously & thinking it was a brilliant car, fancied a coupe again and for me, there’s only one choice.
Looking forward to collection next week.
Mine, going on Collecting Cars soon -- PDK, 13k miles, buckets, AC delete, nav
Currently in OZ, can be freighted back (quoted 4.5k gbp) no tax

Had a few thoughts about doing something to the Spyder (987). Not wanting to transform it and anything done needs to be reversible
Has anyone fitted the IPD plenum in either the direct replacement form or the competition version which also requires the larger throttle body?
I don’t want to change the exhaust or do any remapping.
Always found the brakes a bit soft also. I’d like more bite early on in the pedal press. Anyone done anything effective (don’t say carbon discs). Upgraded hoses or I’ve read before about a brake master cylinder upgrade?

I wouldn't bother with a different plenum. Often they make less power with one. But you have to do the BMC upgrade. It makes a massive difference.

Interesting. Any more on why they’d make less power, against the claimed figures?
I have looked at the filters recently. Simple and relatively cheap swap. I presume you’ve swapped? What kind of difference, just intake noise?
By the by, I fitted a 987 air box, larger plenum and a 74mm TB with Pipercross filter to my 3.2 986.
.
It definitely changed the power and torque delivery. As to whether there is more power, the jury is still out. I need to go on a RR and then fork out for a remap for full benefit.
Was it worth it, seat of the pants, probably more delivery at the top end. Not ideal for the road but this is my TD car.
By comparison, my 987 RS60 which has the Caymen larger throttle body as standard, (has yours?) has noticeably more torque and top end. My advice is to leave alone. Really difficult to gain a noticeable power hike on a NA engine without spending a lot of money for a minor gain that you probably won't notice. Anything under 30-50 bhp isn't worth the hassle imho.

There’s a very interesting bit on the Cayman R thread, top of page 638, you might want to read on this topic before changing things.
Interesting read although I had gleaned similar info from other sources.
If I was the OP I would leave well alone given the possibility of only a minor uplift, if at all!
As for me, I will have to bite the bullet and spend £500 + just to be told that it is worse
.
A lot of it is psychological, I’ve added a FVD Brombacher tune to my 981…. The blurb told me it added 30hp.
Who knows.
It FEELS more
I’ve added BMC filters, the blurb tells me it adds power…who knows.
It SOUNDS better
And I’m happier.
Money well spent.
MrD who use to frequent pistonheads played around with his 987 Spyder until he got a nice uplift in power circa 350hp but this involved headers, exhaust, filter and remap, but I don’t remember 100% so have a google of pistonheads or someone else might remember his mods
On the topic of remapping , is there anyone in the south east that is experienced with remapping Porsche’s?
I am specifically based in the Dorking, Surrey area and could do with someone a little nearer than Chip Wizards!

Thanks. Food for thought.
I will always veer towards keeping it standard unless mods are well known and would definitely provide something.
I do get the mention that the cars are developed by engineers who know what they are doing and things are a way for a reason. However, things are always built to a price, so it’s not too much of a stretch that people might develop items that are better than standard spec.
It was just an itch to look into options for minor gains that importantly could be reversed again.

I know that Parr in Crawley used to have a customer with a 987 Boxster that they remapped/tuned. I didn't use them for my Spyder at the time but have excellent experience using them for my old 911 and GT4.

Upgraded adjustable sports suspension and brakes have been installed by Parr Porsche, with recent tracking completed at factory ride height. Found a pic of fronts which look like bigger 6 pots and giro discs on all 4 corners. Sounds like suspension could be coilovers but not sure which.
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2010-porsche-9...
A nice car but the black on black with black roof doesn’t do it for me.
Suspension sounds confusing, surely it should have PASM. Strange to have the PPF fitted only a few weeks ago and then sell the car!
It will probably go for around the 35 mark I guess.
phazed said:

No PASM button
I thought these came with a simple passive setup?
If someone spent money at Parr on those big brakes I'm thinking Ohlins or some other coilovers. Then maybe the recent adjustment was to raise ride height, corner weight and GEO.
I wonder why they didn’t fit PASM. I would’ve thought this sort of car would’ve benefited from that unless they fitted a more expensive passive system as standard. Not sure why the bigger brakes are fitted, certainly no benefit for the road. I have used mine on track many times and the standard brakes are fine. I must admit though, the six pots do look good.
It shared the passive dampers of the Cayman R ... which has a great reputation !!
One of the complaints of the steel brakes on the CR was that they could be better ... hence PCCB cars are sought after and there weren't many ...

Those look a bit too big to Me. Those fronts could stop a Bus.

I'm a fan of Parr and have used them several times.
I'm not sure about the brake upgrade choice though, one of the key features of the 987 Spyder was the very low unsprung mass (lightest wheels and small brakes) along with hydraulic steering made the feel so direct and delicate.
Agreed ... the alternative would have been an old set of PCCB's (not a good idea since I destroyed mine at around 30,000 miles) or Surface Transforms ? But expensive unless from a racing budget.
I must admit when I was looking, I would have only considered a manual with buckets, spyder wheels and crucially PCCBs-once you add those up it’s a rare spec.
I'm more of a sedate cruiser. So couldn't give a flying F about big brakes and I'd probably wanna try 18 wheels too. I know I know controversy. Those brakes are easily reversed anyway.
