Testing if anyone else has run into fitment issues running Apex 18x9 et46 fronts with either 245/40 or 255/35 tires.
I have this setup for the track on my 2010
Cayman S
with adjustable LCA, Ohlin coilovers, and Tarret thrust arm bushing. I am running -2.8 camber up front with the top mounts pushed as inboard as possible. I have run both Hankook RS-4 in 245/40 and kumho v730 in 255/35, with both rubbing the front fender liner under partial lock. There are no other fitment issues. After a handful of track events, I have worn holes in both front fender liners.
Apex fitment guide lists this setup as good without additional modifications (other than camber). I asked them for guidance, and their advice was to make sure the top mounts are as far inboard as possible (which was already addressed).
Before buying new fender liners, I want to understand if the rubbing is a fact of life with wider wheels/tires, or an issue with Apex fitment, or some suspension setup that is causing the contact.
Update: latest reply from Apex is that my caster is likely set too far forward. This seems like a reasonable explanation, and I will see what can be done to move it back. Still open to any advice if someone has a similar setup.
I have Titans in 18x9 and run Bridgestone in 255/35. I get a little fender liner rub on the drivers side. The part of fender liner toward front of the car at the very bottom. I have about 2.8 neg camber via LCA. Standard strut mounts on top. No camber plates. Also running
Ohlins
.
I think the Titans have a very similar offset to the Apex. I just got a set of Apex as well but haven’t gotten tires for them yet.
The comment about caster makes sense for what I’m getting. Perhaps a bit less caster would reduce the rub toward the front of the car.
I have an 09
Cayman S
with
GT3
LCAs and camber plates up front. I have about -3.4 degrees of camber in the front and about 8 degrees of castor (pretty close to factory spec IIRC). I also have the 18x9et46 fronts with 245/40 Nankang CRS.
I've also worn through my fender liners. I found that running camber plates and reducing the width of shims made it slightly better, but it sounds like you're already doing that. I think it's just something you'll have to live with honestly. I wouldn't want to reduce the castor too much but I'm curious to know if it works for you.
I have an 07
Cayman S
with the same offset Apex wheels and
Ohlins
coilovers, 255/35/18 285/30/18 tires with no rubbing issues at all. I am run -2.8 front and -2 rear camber IIRC.
Do yo have a picture of the liners?
I will grab pictures tonight while I try to dial back the caster. Both liners wore in the exact same spot just below the central mounting screw.
How are to setting camber (shims only or shims plus camber plate)? Did you do anything to adjust caster?
I am more and more convinced I have a caster issue and my last alignment shop ignored it while setting camber.
I'll try and put my car on the alignment rack this week and double check the camber/caster.
Adjusted my caster pucks. Haven't measured the new settings yet. This is the right side front fender liner which is slightly worse than the left.
