I have a Bird Automotive
Bike Rack
that I'm willing to pass on to someone in need. I'd like it to go to a person short on cash but big on love for cycling and
Porsche
987s. Here is a picture. Let me know if you meet the description and we can work out shipping. That is my friend posing for the picture. He has an interesting way of holding the steering wheel.
Generous! Other than a unicorn Gururack, I think this is THE way to carry bikes on a
Boxster
.
(Seasucker for my
Cayman
)
Plus, you get a 007 gun barrel look when not in use
This is the best
bike rack
I've ever owned. Added a D-ring to secure bike and no problem at 100 mph
Also, I did customize it by adding the rack arms from an old Yakima trunk mount rack I used for a previous car. It extended the rack so I could hold three bikes, and it stiffened up the upper arms. I also used the Yakima bike holders and straps. I have the original hardware, but I just felt better with the Yakima holders and extra stiffness.
Looks great! Will it fit a
986
?
Yeah, just checked the manual,
986
and 987 including S models.
I recommend this rack. No longer being made. Used mine just the other day. So easy, and strong.
And it is the right price: free.
Right on. I'll get in touch via e-mail.
I've sometimes wondered if Mr. Bird might entertain offers for his designs, tools, methods, etc. It seemed as if he just decided to stop. It's a loss for our community; it is a fine system, designed and handmade by one guy. I wish now that I'd bought the luggage rack accessory as well.
Mr. Bird treated me very thoughtfully. As I was ordering the
bike rack
, I casually mentioned that since I carry only one bike, I might shorten the arms (I never did). When I received my kit, he'd enclosed a note explaining that he had pre-scored the pipes, and also the Velcro, to make it easier and neater when I cut them. That's a 100% engineer move right there. He and my dad would have been tight.
And I think that probably has a lot to do with his keeping his creation to himself. Somebody else might screw it up.
So it's up to us to keep the extant examples in circulation. Bravo
@JEB
!
Thanks, I agree with you. From what I remember he was a very considerate and conscientious person. We can still find customer service like that but not often. Some things are well designed, and warrant being passed on and given another life.
