I recently got a
987.2 Cayman
. It’s a base,
PDK
,88,000 miles and no sport chronos. I love the car and it’s been amazing to me the past month i’ve owned it but i’ve ran into an issue with the
PDK
. I went and got the car inspected and saw the bill will come out to about 9-10k with labor included. That’s a big bill for me personally as I am only 17. It was a dumb decision getying into such a expensive car at such a young age. The
PDK
isn’t giving me major issues the past month i’ve been driving it but I know eventually I will need to focus on the issue. My whole question is if I was to sell the car what would it be worth? Like I said it’s a 2009,
Pdk
, base and no sport chronos. The bad part is that it does have 3 accidents but they are very very small frame damage so nothing done to the internals also there is a small scratch up front and a chip on the back of the car. I know now that will bring my value down which i’m fully aware of because most people want soemthing that have a perfect title ideally. What would be a fair price point on this vehicle? if any photos of the car would help get an estimate i will be glad to share those photos.

It would be valuable to know what the diagnosis was for the
PDK
malfunction. Did you have this diagnosed at a dealership and do you have access to good independent wrenches? With three accidents, if the
PDK
completely malfunctions and you try to sell it it’s not gonna be worth any more than a roller, just a few grand. It’s a tough choice, but if it were my ride, I would be getting second opinions just like I was at a doctors office before I made any further decisions.
What are you talking about when you say "frame damage"? How did it get done? We need photos of the damage if you want an honest answer.
What work did the quote of $9-10k cover? Who inspected it for this quote?
What is the problem with the
PDK
?
You need to take it to different shops for more
estimates
(NB: NOT guesses!).
Best,
David
Was this just an estimate/quote or was the repair done and this is the actual repair bill? If it is an estimate done without actually dropping and digging into the PDK, the actual cost might be substantially different and you might be better off getting a used/rebuilt transmission. There's not a lot of local shops I'd trust to rebuild a PDK.
AFA what the car is worth....it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Sounds like you might of unknowingly bought someone else's problem. Also, did these 3 accidents show up on a CarFax report with repair costs, or did you get any receipts detailing what was repaired? Did the car have a salvage title? which rings me to the big question...how does a 17 year old buy
"such a expensive car"
[sic] without adult supervision?
I too could afford German cars @ 17.....VW bugs!
I might be missing something, but what is actually wrong with the transmission?
PDK
is just a fun name for a Audi/VW ZF transmission with its own software. It's amazing how much of this trans is the same as out S7 from all of the research I have done and some of the recent challenges we are dealing with.
These transmissions are actually really good. What typically fails on these are the mechatronics and the clutch pack, not the actual transmission itself.
Edited, as I made a mistake and wrote DSG instead of ZF. My apologies for the mix up.
OP posted some info in a previous thread.

Yes, thank you for the correction. My mistake, I typed DSG vs ZF. But yes, from my understanding the
Cayman
and
911
use the ZF transmission too. However, this is a 7 speed vs the 8 speed, and yes the
Cayman
and
911
have their differences from the others. Again, apologies for some misinformation here.
Thank you for referencing the original post. I missed this.
From my experience and the endless reseach with ZF transmission, two components fail on these, at least the Audi/
Porsche
shared ZF transmissions.
First if the Clutch system as these are not a standard single clutch setup. In my experience, the shuddering is usually a result of neededing new clutch and friction disc(s). This is where I would start with shuddering. We replaced the clutch and it's been amazing until... The second most common issue below.
Second most common failure, but usually is not a shuddering is the selenoid and temp controllers in these hybrid electric mechanical units failing. This is usually a selenoid, electric borad or a sticking mechanical issue. We are sending our mechatronics unit to the UK to get it rebuilt $800 vs $3,500 for new and they provide a warranty.
Not sure if this is of any help and sorry to hear all of this happening.
I owned a 76
911
as a 16 - 20 year old. Long story, no rich parents or family, quite the opposite, but had to do everything on my own including a complete engine and transmission rebuild as I was too poor to pay someone. So I get it.
My 17 year old German luxury car had 3 cylinders and 38HP. Nothing wrong with buying what your passion tells you to at 17 years old, it provides a lesson in life - "the most expensive car you may ever own is a German luxury car out of warranty.." (me).
Unfortunately, I'm a VERY slow learner.
