Hey everyone! I'm obviously new here and new to Porsches, so please be gentle. I've been a long time American car guy and looking forward to branching out.
I've been looking for a
987.1
base or S for several months now. I've been watching auctions and doing lots of research and driven a few cars. I finally found a base in Cobalt Blue out of state that I have a purchase agreement with the seller on.
Im trying to confirm what options came on the car. I did a search on the forum but can't find anything regarding vin decoding or build sheet info. Is there any way to look this info up?
I also need a good tire recommendation. The car has the base 17" wheels but needs new
tires
. I'm used to
PS4s
or Continental Extreem Contacts. But there doesn't seem to be many options available in 17". I prefer a summer tire with good ride and comfort without sacrificing handling.
Thanks!
I haven't needed VIN decoding for a while, and there doesn't seem to be any free decoders online for Porsches.
This one is $12.99
Presumably you've already put some money down, so what's another $12.99?
I can't help on the 17" wheels. Haven't had tiny wheels since my 71 Fiat 124
I used Discount Tire real quick. Not much for options. Depending on your pocket book, PS2 would be the best for a sport tire.

Everything else in the 17 is ok, but again, you can go from $700 for a set to $1400 a set.
Choose what works for you, want you want out of the tire, and so forth.
I got my VIN decoding from
Suncoast
for pretty inexpensive. I got it within a day or two I think. Also, Cobalt Blue Metallic really is one of the best colors of these cars. I get compliments on mine all the time and it was really what sold me on my car. In the bright sun, it really is spectacular. Also good that you got a base as S models tend to have higher chances of bore scoring, which could be a death sentence unless you're interested in doing a swap like I did.
Thanks. I actually preferred the S, but the color combo and good service history sold me. I wont be able to pick it up for a while, so can't quite celebrate yet.
I’ve got a 2007 base with the 17s and have been very happy with the Continental DWS06+
tires
.
I had to go up 10mm in tire width all around but the car still feels light and nimble.
Congrats on the car!!
On my 2006 with 17” I went to a 215/50/17 fronts. Opens up a lot of options.
