Have had the fault codes checked, nil reported...Regarding the MAF sensor cleaning is it the Bosche part bolted onto the air intake (square) or the one underneath (Rectangular)???Looked on Ebay could only find 993 MAF sensor...are there any simple tests to isolate the MAF sesnor as the culprit?

Suggestion

I'd look at replacing the plugs, after a lean running period they are likely to be a little worn from the higher temperatures etc.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Having periodic rough running and occassional backfire from the 3.4L...at other times sensational...been told could be the MAF...are there any checks before replacing this $1000 (400gbp)!!!! ? only to find out that "it isnt the MAF afterall, sir"...any other suggestions on likely causes/cures? This all started after the Oil filler neck split causing the motor to lean out.

POST 2Original post

I know you can clean the MAF, but not 100% sure how to do this. One of the other guys will know. ARe you losing a lot of power and is the check engine light on? If losing a lot of power then could be a coil pack.

POST 3Original post

Cleaning the MAF is a relatively easy task, a secure Torx will allow you to remove this easily. Alternatively you can remove the top of the airbox and hoses and clean it that way. You spray electronics cleaner onto the MAF sensor, let it dry and reassemble. I'd look at replacing the plugs, after a lean running period they are likely to be a little worn from the higher temperatures etc. As Chris says you might have a knackered coil-pack. A faulty MAF or coil-pack will register a fault in the ECU so get it along to a OPC or a specialist. Damian If you were in the UK I'd say check out eBay there's a new 3.4 MAF for £90.
