I used foam clay to pack under the bars and then wrapped those with carbon fiber after the foam clay dried.

Suggestion
I would recommend the Yakima Load Warrior as I make the Bay to SoCal drive several times a year and the car handles luggage, boxes, and other stuff on the rack like a champ.

I have used Yakima racks for decades (bike, ski, cargo box) and they have always been high quality items that are very secure on the car.

I have seen people use the 996 Tequipment rack but I hear that the fitment is not as good as the 987 one, and it takes additional work to mount it.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went down the rabbit hole looking for a roof rack for a
987.2
.
Porsche
hasn't sold one for some time, and ebay has been dry. I found several posts that claim the 996 rack is the same as the one for the
Cayman
, and a few have installed them with success.
Yakima is highly regarded, and they make a nice rack that has locks. Where the
Porsche
bars are integrated with towers and have a sleek look, the Yakima cross bars extend out beyond the towers. That may make them more useful as they have more area. Price wise they are similar enough not to be a deciding factor. My main reason for wanting this is we make a monthly trip to SoCal (400+ miles) and I would like to drive my
Porsche
.
What are your thoughts on these two, and what would you choose? FYI, I will also use the cargo carrier below.
I have used Yakima racks for decades (bike, ski, cargo box) and they have always been high quality items that are very secure on the car. (I have used them on other Porsches, but not my
Cayman
, however.) Assuming the kit you show is designed specifically for the
Porsche
mounting
points
, I'm sure it will be great.
The 996
Porsche
kit looks to be more sleek, and (assuming it fits on the
Cayman
) will guarantee a good attachment.
Given the similar prices, I would probably base my decision on which is easier/quicker to mount and dismount. Also be sure the 996 bars are wide enough to reach the attachment
points
of your cargo carrier.
I am using the
Porsche
Tequipment 987 specific roof rack with the Yakima Load Warrior basket, and I have the Yakima Skyrise tent. I forget which brand of
bike rack
I have. I have seen people use the 996 Tequipment rack but I hear that the fitment is not as good as the 987 one, and it takes additional work to mount it.
I would recommend the Yakima Load Warrior as I make the Bay to SoCal drive several times a year and the car handles luggage, boxes, and other stuff on the rack like a champ. I use it to take grills, coolers, and a spare wheel/tire to the track too.
Thanks for replying, I was beginning to think it was a bad idea (comments on another site). Nice looking car and setup! Good to hear from people who actually use it and have real world experience. My trip this month is cancelled, so I have time to figure it out.
Unfortunately, they discontinued the
Porsche
Tequipment 987 long ago and are not easy to find used. I've been looking. So, the 996 will have to do.
I made my own rack out of carbon fiber and foam. Works great for me but it’s more for a waterski or for the emergency need to carry something. I curved them to match the roof line which would make a flat box or tent not work.
I keep them in the trunk all the time.
It would be easy to make your own if you can’t find what you want.
Very impressive work. If you are experienced with CF layups I would love a YouTube DIY tutorial on how to accomplish this. I'd love to make some custom CF parts for my 987.
I am not an expert by any means but the crossbars are pretty easy. I cut strips of foam tile board and then wrapped carbon fiber around them like a burrito. Wet the carbon with epoxy with each roll of the burrito. Then wrap the whole thing in plastic to help pull it tight. If you were making a straight bar rather than following the roof curve you could put the whole thing a long food saver vacuum bag and vacuum compress it.
Making the towers is the harder part. I used foam clay to pack under the bars and then wrapped those with carbon fiber after the foam clay dried. That’s how I bonded the towers to the crossbars by wrapping them together with carbon. If I were to do it again I would 3D print towers and then wrap those in carbon fiber. But you could make your own roof rack with some ingenuity and YouTube research.
Longtime reader first time responding. Hey guys! 🤚
Traversed the roof rack path for our beloved car myself.
As in my case the use would be just quite incidentally I ended up with the variant I stumbled upon on
Aliexpress
(and yes I know, of all places right
. Did not know what to expect but have to admit that they seem to be very solid, well build and would say they can hold up against the known alternatives, and of course just for a fraction of the price.
Was easily confident enough to strap on an aluminium little boat I picked up through Craig’s List (and driving 80 like it was just business as usual
.
Just shot an incidental photo on two occasion but can make more
next
time I use them and add pix later.

I found a post on ******** (

The photo he posted showed that it fit just like my 987.1 rack.

Folks - just a tiny comment/request from the admin/mod side of the house... before posting HUGE photos within posts on Planet-9, please read
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/posting-photos-in-posts-to-planet-9.253974/
- and do a bit of pre-post editing/resizing so the photos display at a reasonable size, and don't bog down for people viewing the forum on a smart-phone (perhaps with a limited data plan.)
It only takes a few moments to resize photos and crop them so the important part stands out.. please help keep Planet-9 a place people want to hang out!
