I know there are a number of videos online that have similar noise and are referring to a sticky valve, but seems strange that this happens after I run her a littler hard.

The 2.7s used cast pistons (as opposed to forged in the 3.4) and from my understanding, this is the primary cause.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

I've noticed a little knocking sound at idle after some mildly spirited driving. Is this a normal sound or should I be worried?

POST 2Original post

Vehicle model? Year? Mileage? Have you ever done a used oil analysis (eg Blackstone)? That's where I would start. What oil weight are you using. And, where are you located?

POST 3Original post

Its a 2005 Base Boxster with 92K miles. I last changed the oil with 5W40 full synthetic Mobil 1 . I'm located in Southern California and have never used an oil analysis service. I know there are a number of videos online that have similar noise and are referring to a sticky valve, but seems strange that this happens after I run her a littler hard. This is a weekend car and I maybe put 1500 miles on per year, but hoping this isn't anything abnormal.

POST 5Original post

I had a slight knocking sound from not properly tightened spark plugs , it only happened once the engine was warm. Did you replace them recently? Besides of the lifters that's another thing to look at.

POST 6Original post

I replaced them about 1k miles ago. I suppose I can check them.

POST 7Original post

I'll just comment that for all the talk of a lifter noise (not only here, but on Facebook Porsche threads) - not once have I seen anyone report back that their noise actually WAS a noisy lifter. And I've been here for a while and seen a lot of threads like this. Unfortunately - the usual result is bore score, particularly on pre-2009 cars. You might check the exhaust bolts, both the ones holding the headers to the engine, and the ones at exhaust couplings. Those could - if one is loose or missing - cause a noise that is only evident after hard driving, where the exhaust gets hot enough to expand a bit. This is a higher probability than a loose spark plug (although, as mentioned, that has happened).

POST 8Original post

Thanks for the responses. With what I've read bore scoring isn't much of a risk on the base 2.7 motors. I suppose anything is possible. Im hoping to get some time this weekend and will attenpt to verify the exhaust bolts and plugs tightness.

POST 9Original post

I don't believe there are any known cases of bore scoring on the 2.7s, end of. The 2.7s used cast pistons (as opposed to forged in the 3.4) and from my understanding, this is the primary cause. I would not worry yourself that this could be bore scoring until you get more conclusive evidence beyond any noises that you're hearing.
