Reported fix
I was having issues with the AOS, so I replaced it and about 12 months later, I was again having trouble with the AOS. I ended up replacing it (again) with an UAOS with the drain back option and have no more issues.

I've removed my Porsche OEM AOS which was replaced in January 2018 and went about 22,000 miles.

Yep, buying one tomorrow with the drain back to replace my porsche motorsports AOS.

Pretty damn excited to get that baby on the car and run an extra quart of oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've removed my Porsche OEM AOS which was replaced in January 2018 and went about 22,000 miles. I have 93,000 miles on the car which is a 2004 C2 Cab with tiptronic. The car runs fine and in 2018 when I did the AOS, I had my Indy do the RMS, water pump and IMS. I noticed a smoke cloud when I was on the Fwy and then again a few minutes later at a red light. Same symptoms as my reason for changing it in 2018. I did a monometer test and got a reading of -5.9 and Jake Raby says to be concerned when -4.5 to -5 so I figure that my AOS is failing and I have the AOS out and I'm ready to order parts. Yes it was a tough job due to limited space even after lowering the engine to rest on cross member. The worst part is poor lighting, arms not long enough, working by feel and with a mirror - but I did it. Getting back to which part to go with: UAOS or Porsche OEM. I searched some of the threads but didn't see any response from Jake Raby on whether he likes the UAOS. Reading about the failures of the OEM AOS I'm reluctant to use it again. Looking for opinions from some of you and hopefully Jake. Thanks
The UAOS isn't Jake's contraption so there's pretty much 0% chance he'll comment on it good or bad.
Regardless, it's a proven upgrade for the M96 and the cost differential between it and a standard AOS is pretty negligible in the grand scheme of things and it will likely pay for itself in the long run.
Yep, buying one tomorrow with the drain back to replace my porsche motorsports AOS. Superior product to oem aos and motorsports aos. Wish it was available 20 years ago when I bought my 996.
I was having issues with the AOS, so I replaced it and about 12 months later, I was again having trouble with the AOS. I ended up replacing it (again) with an UAOS with the drain back option and have no more issues. So would definitely recommend this.
Yes talking with my wallet. When a branded factory AOS fails so often vs a determined developed alternative with mechanical reasoning, and talking to those let down by Porsche AOS - couldn't go to meet due to out of box AOS. UAOS gets my money for trying. Open to questions after real world installation.
My UAOS has already proven itself dependable. Got the flashing dash light that the sensor ties into and had to drain the catch can of accumulated moisture.
I’m a nobody that just uses the car hard so take it FWIW… The UAOS and drain fixed problems I had no reasonable alternate solution to fixing, did so at a cost that is reasonable and made the car much more serviceable.
Skip is responsive and intelligent and provided me with excellent support and advice on how to make my setup the best it could be for my particular use.
Yes... UAOS in a heartbeat. My particular unit has a constant warning light, which Skip and I are trying to address, but it's STILL 1000% better than the stock OEM part. I don't track my car, and I try to avoid short runs without getting the engine up to operating temp for at least 30 minutes, and yet my UAOS final catch basin collects more water condensation than it does oil. This is heads & tails better than the old unit because I don't want water vapor recirculating back into the crank case. All in all, a MUCH better system (even with my unit's issue with the warning light).
Thank you to everybody for your responses. I was already leaning towards the UAOS but the price over the OEM is quite a bit more. However, when weighing the failure rate of the OEM part it would be silly to use it again and I certainly don't want to change the AOS again. My Indy quoted me around $1,200 including the parts but I went with the challenge and did it myself and took my time - so I'm half way finished with the job. I'll be ordering the UAOS
It looks like you already made the correct decision. I put a UAOS on my 02 996 Tip. No issues other than what jbrob is experiencing. Skip is top notch and is also working with me to find the cause. Just to be clear, the only issue is the warning light coming on too soon. The part itself is working just fine.
Just ordered my new UAOS with drain back from Skip today. Pretty damn excited to get that baby on the car and run an extra quart of oil. There have been three immensely important inventions for the M96 engine over the years, and Skip has developed 2 of the 3.
(1) IMSB Retro/Solution
(2) UAOS with drainback
(3) UIDS
I suspect a few more ground breaking inventions will appear this year as well. Bottom line, there isn't a problem that hasn't been addressed with the M96 engine. Doubt there is a car ever made that has this type of ingenuity and aftermarket support. If you don't feel good about the future of the 996, you should!
