If this is being limited entirely by the electronic control, then does a chip change/reprogram easily remove the limitation?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

i just wanted to say that i found the new suntimes article from chicago the first worst about the cayman, i dont understand how some people become journalists with skills like this: For instance, the car is offered with a "full range'' of optional seats, but why bother? On the other hand, the optional leather interior is very inviting.

POST 3Original post

you can find it in the new articles here, it was added today.

POST 4Original post

http://www.suntimes.com/output/auto/car-news-car26.html I think what he says is actually mostly valid. Perhaps what he doesn't understand is that the owners of these cars might not be 'normal' and may actually use the capabilities of the car. In addition, I suspect many of us will hit the track with the car and that will certainly come in handy. -Pete Edited by - stratmosphere on 09/27/2005 11:33:13 AM

POST 5Original post

Not much else he could have said given the context of a newspaper article. Now we know who was invited to Italy to drive the car and when they were allowed to publish their articles (i.e. post-Frankfurt).

POST 6Original post

i suppose what i meant to say about the article was, why did'nt the newpaper contact me to drive the car in italy and write about it lol

POST 7Original post

'...generates impressive torque at lower engine speeds. That should make it easy to drive in the Chicago area because it delivers strong acceleration without excessive shifting. There's a standard, slick six-speed manual gearbox, but I only needed to use third gear most of the time...' Notice how flat the torque line is, between 140 and 180 from 2200 to 7000 rpm. Wow, you'll be able to drive it in any gear you want, like a tractor! Also notice how the HP line flattens out, obviously it electronically limited. One other quote I love: 'A central exhaust emits a race-car-style wail if the engine is revved hard, but the car otherwise is fairly quiet. ' NICE!!!

POST 8Original post

Just an FYI- the author DAN JEDLICKA is a very old guy as I remember. He may be a little old school.

POST 9Original post

yep- i noticed that too in one of the latest issues of EVO from britain. The older the journalist the more the complaints there are on the suspension, ride quality and seats. clearly candidates for a cayanne and not a cayman.

POST 10Original post

Hey, take it easy on the Cayenne -old man jokes.

POST 11Original post

No big deal, I am just an old man with a Cayenne . Best darn vehicle around if you live in Michigan where I cannot drive my Cayman 5 months a year.

POST 13Original post

The torque curve is so important because it really speaks to 'realworld' driving conditions. The 2.5L Boxster was not as bad as some peaky engines (i.e. S2000 )where you need 6000rpm just to get away from astoplight, but there was never enough torque available at low rpms to make the car feel like it was accelerating. The 987SI drove had none of that problem, the engine pulled strongly through all the gears, and just got better in the mid power band. Edited by - DaveC on 09/29/2005 11:52:00 AM

POST 14Original post

we are talking about 295 bhp dave, i would expect it get past a lot of cars in any gear.

POST 15Original post

DaveC, Couldn't agree more. Time and time again I hear people quoting HP numbers without thinking about torque and they entirely miss the real-world driving experience. The Lotus Elise is another car that comes to mind that due to lack of torque you must wind up to get it to go anywhere and where it falls down along with other similar cars on tracks that favor cars with more torque. The driving essence of a car is so much more than simple HP numbers alone. When people ask me 'why do you pay so much to drive a Porsche I could get a car with the same or more horsepower for less $' I tell them 'drive it and see for yourself'. I like the Porsche formula, sure I'd like it for less $$, but I don't see that happening any time soon... /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/regular_smile.gif

POST 16Original post

suburu imprezza wrc dont do a bad job with both the torque and the hp, half the cost and i would not like to try and lose one on the back roads to my house. And the chances of me taking my cayman on the track, or any one of my cars is slim to none, i like the idea of it, same as i like the idea of jumping at 35000 feet but it doesnt mean i am going to do it. i do concur about the real world driving experience.

POST 17Original post

I been thinking of a list of cars that are faster than a Cayman in 1/4 mile... and it's short list. 911,Corvette,Viper,Ford GT, Ferrari's, Lambo's, SL55,E55,SLK55,CLK55.... What else?

POST 21Original post

New V8 M3 probably, but not so sure about current E46 model. Would be close. Again, no contest in handling based on my comparison of my M3 versus my test drives of 987S. Boxster crushes the M3 in terms of fun, handling, and feel. Also it feels just as fast and urgent and sounds a lot better. Granted I do have a convertible which certainly has an impact versus the coupe. It was wierd. I love the M3 and have a ball through the twisty hilly roads in Austin and surroundings, but my M3 felt like an SUV after driving the new Boxster S.

POST 22Original post

Chrismillion - Your post notes the flattening of the HP curve at 6000 rpm. If this is being limited entirely by the electronic control, then does a chip change/reprogram easily remove the limitation? Would there be any negative consequences to this?
