When I flushed the system last year I set the level to max with the engine hot and not cold which I just learned was the proper way.

Porsche states to fill coolant level to the max line with engine cold. When doing so it leaves no room for expansion when hot , is that how the system is supposed to operate? I did this method and after engine reached max operating temp the expansion tank is completely full. Nothing leaks or overflows but I don�t understand where the coolant is able to expand too.Once cooled it drops back down to the max line.

Full line is where it needs to be cold. Did u just do coolant system work or just top off? If u did maintenance then u may still have an air bubble in the system causing the tank to appear over full. It will work itself out through the purge valve.

That�s what made me go fill it to the max line with it cold . Every other car I�ve had with an expansion tank has a cold and a hot line and the coolant has room to move up and down . Filling the tank to the max line cold leaves almost zero room for expansion. Just seems counter intuitive from what I am used to.

The max line is at the seam of the tank. There is plenty if room for expansion unless u r filling with the front of the car down hill.
