I had to replace the starter in my
Cayman
and while I was removing the E14 bolts, I slipped and cracked the crankcase breather hose. It was exceptionally brittle and crumbled like a cracker. Probably needed replaced anyway.
Can this hose be replaced with something like a rubber hose and worm clamps or does it have to be this ribbed plastic hose? I tried to find an inexpensive replacement on
amazon
but no dice.
While I’m no expert
Porsche
technician, I can’t think of any reason why a standard rubber hose would not be a suitable replacement for the rigid, ribbed hose. Examining its purpose, to provide a source of air at atmospheric pressure, the rubber hose should fit the requirements of the original. But I’ll be following this to see how others weigh in.
This is what my dad said as well. He has been a mechanic for 47 years and was 99% sure a rubber hose with the same inside diameter should work well and be a more durable replacement. But, since he hasn't kept up on German cars, he said to check with the forum in case someone has ran into an known problem not using the specified hose.
If it fits properly, I can't imagine what sort of issue it could cause.. and if it did cause an issue, THEN you can spend the large money on the POS ribbed hose..
Nothing magic there, just an air tunnel. The thing with the factory hose, not only is it risky to touch, you really shouldn't even look at them. They're that sensitive.
I went through a couple iterations of replacing bad sections with rubber hose, no problem with functionality, but the quarters are so tight I was glad ultimately to buy an expensive replacement and be done with it for a decade or two.
Question, how did you get that long breather hose back under the intake manifold
Thanks for your reply! I had a very similar experience (swearing, needing to walk away)
I finally was too scared of breaking the new hose so I removed the plenums and loosened, but did not remove, the intake runners. That gave me just enough wiggle room to get it through. What a pain in the butt, it is done though, so should be good for a while!

Hi guys, I had the exact same problem with the braking that breather hose but in the process I also broke the fastener loop that holds the intake tube to the engine. My plan was to just superglue glue it back together since it seems to just be hard plastic. I wanted to get some opinions on that. If needs be I’ll buy an other tube but if I can avoid that I will.
Superglue isnt the best for repairs like that. Its better for porous surfaces that won't have any movement from engine vibration. If you have a plastic welding kit or a soldering iron and black zip ties, you can weld the piece back on with new plastic and have a strong hold with a little give to accommodate the vibrations. Depending on the plastic, an acetone based plastic weld may also work to fuse the plastic back together. I've used the sprues from my plastic models before. I melt them down inside a jar of acetone or plastic weld liquid then paint it in with an old small brush. Styrene, styafoam, Gundam sprues, and games workshop sprues are what I've used before. I'm actually rebiling the inside of the driver door plastic cover right now with it.
