Hello, I'm the original owner of a manual 2011
Cayman
. Maintenance over the past 14 years has included routine oil and filter, engine, air and cabin filters, brake, fluid, flush, tires, etc.
I did my last oil change, but I've scheduled the car for routine maintenance with my trusted local independent
Porsche
specialist. He is recommending manual transmission oil change as well as antifreeze flush and drive belt replacement.
Given the age of the vehicle, it's probably time to change the drive belt, but I thought the coolant is a "lifetime" system and did not plan on doing an AF change until water pump. What is the consensus here? Also, any thoughts on transmission oil change?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Would be interesting to hear some opinions / experience here. FWIW (for our '05
987.1
5MT):
1. The PO did drive belt, water pump / coolant 25K miles ago (but 14 years ago) - the drive belt looks good visually (sitting in FL most of its life) and thinking about doing the coolant (and my buddy has the "vacuum exchange thing" - if I were you, I would wait until the water pump replacement
2. Did the transmission fluid change 2 years ago (with Redline 75W90 NS) - easy enough and surprisingly the fluid "looks good" - I would do this soon
I would definitely do the transmission fluid. It’s inexpensive and due every 10 years or XX miles. Even if the mileage is fine, the time is a factor.
in terms of drive belt, I would do that along with water pump, thermostat and tensioners. And that’s the time for any coolant flush or perhaps replenishment. If the belt is original, I would definitely replace it soon. It’s a pain if it goes on you.
"Lifetime fluid" Whose lifetime? In Germany lifetime is about 5 years...they trade out cars often there. I have a german friend who lives here in San Diego. When his relatives come to visit, they want to go to our cars and coffee to see the old German cars. I thought that is weird, they are coming from Germany? He tells me, they don't have many old cars still driving around. Beteen rust, strict TUV inspections and a desire for the latest tech gadgetry, most old cars gone.
Don't believe that lifetime crap. That has been debunked a long time ago. 10 years, change the coolant and transmission fluid. Most of the time the water pump would've died by now and you would've gotten new coolant but if you have the original pump and thermostat, yes, it's time to change it.
I did my water pump on my 2012
PDK
and noticed a good bit less engine whine.
It is easy to do, and it can't hurt to change the fluid, although it supposedly is "lifetime" it does have corrosion preventatives that get depleted.
Gear oil oxidizes and loses friction reducers by heat and being sheared in use.
I was kindda in the same boat as you were. I had 100k miles on my car when I got it so for my peace of mind I looked for the Major maintenance checklist for the 987 and went down the list to match the closest to the milage. Did the belt, spark plugs, oil change, filter change and a bunch of visual inspections. Overall not difficult to do but it takes some time. It took me about a month on and off to get thru the whole checklist. If you have time I think it’s probably a two maybe three day project. Good luck man!!
