Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Driving along, no one around me, crack! It's just a bit larger than a quarter. So I get a new windshield! Before I call USAA, need recommendations on what brand to replace it with.

POST 2Original post

Ouch! (but better than the same happening to paint, so theres that) I had similar luck year before last. My Trusted Indy referred me to a specific glass repair outfit. I find the couple-hundred dollar results astonishing. If Id had to replace the windshield: I would have paid up for Sekurit. Wind and water will exploit even the slightest mis-fit, so OEM glass is worth it to me every time.

POST 4Original post

I would suggest you call 2-3 glass installers in your area and see what is available . Supply chain issues may make your selection for you . Do you have a Porsche dealer near you ? Maybe call them and see who they suggest to make sure you get a quality repair done. Good luck .

POST 5Original post

If you are adamant on OEM glass you need to confirm this with the installer if available and many use OEM equivalent glass also , many of which are very good . Just make sure you know upfront what you are getting . Dealerships depending on where you are will also use third party installers that may also use OEM equivalent spec glass also.

POST 6Original post

I don't have any recommendations on the glass, but I have a strong recommendation on dropping USAA for Hagerty! I have had USAA auto insurance (and homeowner's/banking/some retirement/CC) since I was 16, I am 46 now. Two months ago I dropped 3 of my "collector" vehicles from USAA and moved them to Hagerty (I left my daily at USAA only cause Hagerty wouldn't insure it). With identical coverage, Hagerty was $200 less for all 3 cars combined, than USAA was for one of them!! Told my father, who has been a member a few decades longer than me, and he made the switch to Hagerty for 2 of his cars, and the results were the same. USAA is a JOKE! They ain't what they used to be.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: Called the local dealer: car is a 03 C2 coupe Windshield w/green tint on top: 996-541-901-33, backorder, $1,083.72 - this is what I have now Windshield w/no green tint on top: 996-541-901-34, available, $1,056.43 - probably go with this one Frame: 996-541-531-02, available, $123.90 Seal: 996-541-531-00, available $74.47 Local dealer uses a company called AK Autoglass to do all their windshields. They come highly recommended. Still need to call AK and find out how much they charge. USAA on first call only wants to reimburse me $734, I'm calling them today to appeal. Will probably go with getting all the stuff from the Porsche dealer and having AK install it. I'll continue the fight with USAA.

POST 8Original post

Are you certain that cannot be fixed? Maybe it could. Our insurance deductible was $1000, so we just paid to have ours fixed out of pocket and not make an insurance claim. We just landed new insurance through Costco that was dirt cheap. Im talking $250/yr for my 996 full coverage. That is not a bad price compared to other cars. Our 2019 BMW X3s windshield was $2k OEM, but we opted with a near-identical replacement for $1200 total cost. The only difference was the BMW logo missing. We chose Safelight. Safelight gave us the option to pick either one. Ive heard good things about Safelight and I had a good experience with them. Theres something about using a company thats all they do is windshield replacements to get it done.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I called Hagerty and they won't insure me cuz it's my daily driver.

POST 10Original post

At least you can still get a replacement windshield for the 996! I need a replacement windshield for my VW Corrado - none to be had in the USA, I had to by 15 of them from a company in the Netherlands AND have them air-freighted to the USA!

POST 11Original post

Had my windshield replaced three years ago with OEM. I can't stand wavy glass like I've seen so many times with other windshields. I payed $900 from Porsche plus what ever the install price was, so the prices you have been quoted does not seem to bad to me, considering what's going on in the world.

POST 12Original post

When I purchased new my 03, the same thing happened to me after about an hour when I left the dealership on my way home. Also, my rear bumper was damaged at the dealership when I was completing the purchase.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 18034692

I love Hagerty. The car enthusiast emails, videos and magazine are an added bonus. Curious - why wouldn't they insure your daily driver?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 18035173

As far as I know they don't insure dailies at all. My dad and I both tried in WA and they wouldn't let us.

POST 15Original post

I'd like to move to Hagerty as well but they don't want your car to be your only car and in some cases they may require it is garaged. As much as they preach about driving your cars I hope this changes some day, but I also understand the business side of it. Cars driven less will have a smaller chance of an accident and a claim. I'm hoping the Porsche insurance comes to more states.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 18034692

Agree, I signed up with USAA in college and at the time it was a great deal. They wouldn't insure my classic restored CJ5 which was how I discovered Hagerty. I just moved 2 986s and my 996 over to Hagerty. Incidentally, I canceled USAA while my 996 windshield was still in process. They still paid it. Back to the OP, I have had multiple windshields replaced by Safelite (Corvette, 996, BMW X5, etc) and they always do great work. I've never had an issue with quality of material, leaks, etc.

POST 17Original post

Thanks for the quotes. I have a similar chip. Does anyone know if it's possible to salvage windshields from a parts car? Re: Insurance. Check out Grundy, they have even lower agreed value policy quotes than Hagerty.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 18035594

It is very possible to remove a windshield from a parts car, you just need to go really carefully. My success rate is about 50%. I would suggest not using the windshield knives if you go this route, they invariably crack the glass. I use a utility knife and cut through the urethane from the inside. Change the blades frequently. The bottom corners are hard to do, I use a 1" putty knife that I sharpened on the end and sides to slice through the urethane. Put some duct tape or gaffer's tape from the windshield up to the roof to keep it from dropping down. I usually need to remove the dash to get into the bottom glue line.

POST 19Original post

So I used USAA to replace my sun sand beaten windshield via Safelite. Its aftermarket glass but has the correct connection points for what Im guessing is the radio antenna. There isnt any weird distortion, not even to the edges and clear while wearing polarized sunglasses. I called to get an estimate on a Porsche glass and was quoted something along the lines of 1600.00 if I didnt use my insurance and paid out of pocket. The two biggest auto glass installers in the Miami area is Safelite(national brand) and Charlies Auto glass which is a local company.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 18033602

I would just call USAA theyll send safelite to your house. The good is thats a lifetime warranty job. Also in the comfort of your house. I had hail damage on my truck and a bit on the Porsche. Anyway I called them, told them that the storm was an act of god. Anyway the truck was settled 2 weeks ago, yesterday they looked at the Porsche appraised the damage and the payment is showing incoming on my checking account. Im going to use that money to fix some dings and then I need to start working on paint correction.

POST 21Original post

When I bought my 996.2 back in 2017 it had a crack all the way across. I went with Safelite and I'm happy. It did take them 3 attempts though. They brought unacceptable windshields 2 times. The first installer noticed right away and didn't touch the car and ordered another windshield.. The second installer was going to remove my old windshield first and I asked to see the new windshield before he touched my car...he discovered it also had a bad scratch. They blamed the shipper, but I think they brought me the same windshield. Third time was a charm, and I got a discount for the delays.(I had to pay out of pocket, so that was VERY helpful) Don't let them remove your old windshield before you confirm the new windshield is acceptable. Especially if your 996 is your daily driver!

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
