Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Is there a name and/or good quality rattle can equivalent for the gunmetal/titanium interior trim color shown in this pic? Please pay no attention to the artfully paced chunk of foam in the vent that I didn't even notice until I opened the jpeg. For what it's worth, I'm investigating painting the hard plastic just below the armrests in the doors in this color, but I don't know what it's called. Sad!

POST 2Original post

I don’t have an answer for you, but I will say that a somewhat common mod is to paint those parts the same color as the exterior paint (along with the center console). I think that was an OE option, so people like to pimp their ride that way. You can also remove one of those parts and take it to an auto body paint place to color match it. I’ve had pretty good luck that way on other paint projects.

POST 3Original post

My center console is already out being painted in body color! As to getting the armrest trim pieces done the same - that doesn't sound like a bad idea. My only problem is, where do I find OE Porsche paint in a rattle can? My initial attempt at fixing the parts myself went bad when the only LVP colors didn't include Sand Beige - which is crazy, given how awful the finish is on the plastic parts. They could make a killing!

POST 4Original post

I forgot to mention that auto body paint places can put their custom mixed paint into an aerosol can (what I’ve been doing). No big paint setup needed. However, having said that, if you will be extending the same color elsewhere in the car, you should really consider having whoever is doing the center console also do the other trim pieces so the color is 100% an exact match. Otherwise it will be almost guaranteed to be slightly different and you’ll have to decide if that difference is ok. Pictures below are of an experiment I did to test the exterior color of my car (atlas grey) on its stone grey interior using a junkyard door panel. Masked and primed (after stripping the OE paint - a required step learned from this experiment) After paint + cheap clear coat When I get around to the full paint project, I’ll be pulling the center console as well, and also be using a 2-part catalyzed clear coat can as it is much stronger than a basic clear coat. TBH, still trying to decide if I prefer the body painted anccents over the monochrome look, but am leaning towards yes.

POST 5Original post

Looks pretty good in the pictures. I hadn't even thought about doing the upper trim piece, but it makes sense. Is it difficult to remove the window switches, etc.? Also, when looking for spray cans, were you looking at the paint suppliers, or body shops themselves?

POST 6Original post

I didn’t need to worry about that since they were all removed by the junkyard. I will say masking around the piece under the arm rest is the trickiest part as there are a lot of compound curves as well as the pocket itself. You can slide the masking tape under the lip of the plastic, but it isn’t super simple and requires patience. For the paint, I went to a paint supplier and not to an auto body shop.

POST 7Original post

I thank you for your replies. I like the light-colored interior in my car, but the finish (after nearly 15 years) needs some help, and I haven't been able to find much help on the web so far. And I know about masking the armrest parts, and yes, it took me a while (though I left the lid/armrest in place). If I could ask one more question - how much did your extra/practice door card run you? I know what they cost new already! Last comment, I worry that putting Racing Green Metallic details on the door cards might be too much, but I'm willing to take the chance.

POST 8Original post

I believe they call this Volcano Grey. There was a guy that made up some but his supply was depleted several years ago. https://********.com/forums/997-forum/824773-volcano-grey-touch-paint-i-found-it.html There is a commercially available substitute that is identical or at least extremely close. Nissan's Dark Titanium Metallic KR2 can be found at touchupdirect.com. There may be other sources as well. Nissan Dark Titanium Metallic KR2 Touch Up Paint I got a couple of rattle cans - could not discern any real difference.

POST 9Original post

Does anyone know how to remove that "Volcano Grey" strip? and the steering wheel "Volcano Grey" trim piece? I would like to paint both those to match the door pull color - some shade of silver... Thx
