On my C4S I used luggage ratchet straps on the springs (compressed the springs with a bottle jack under the wheel carrier when the car was on stands).

I need to replace my top mounts on the front. Quick question, can these be done without having to to take the strut out and remove the calliper etc? Maybe with spring compressors etc? Lots seem to do it with a RWD, but of course the Turbo is AWD. TIA

I did this recently ona C4S which has the same suspension as the Turbo. Yes, you can replace the front top mounts without dismantling anything else. Watch out for seized 21mm piston rod bolts, and the inner collar of the top mount separating from the rubber. This inner collar can also seize onto the piston rod. Once you have undone the top mount, you can push the new one up past the spring. Be prepared also to replace the top bearing and bump stops and dust covers. These will all be knackered. The shocks themselves are agricultural on the turbo, and don't tend to be worn out even after insane mileages. Springs can rust a tiny bit but are high quality and can be taken out and hammerited if necessary.

I would be very careful trying to do that inside the wheel arch , in fact I would 100% remove the whole unit and do it properly.
