Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, There seems to be much misinformation on the net regarding LSD on PSM equipped cars online. I am prepping my 996.2 C2 manual for the track and I went on a test drive on a local track, you can feel so much the open diff. I have heard much about vawetrack and quaife etc. I would like a LSD diff for the car. Does in interfere with PSM? How can I fully disable PSM while retaining ABS? Also what is a good option that will also allow for some fun on the street (drifts) thanks! Dick

POST 2Original post

Not sure which lsd u shoud use. I have the factory unit but is different in the gt3 trans. U may want to look up the OS Giken unit. U can just turn off the psm but u also need to unplug it from the abs computer. The psm will burn it us eventually and its not cheap.

Thnks!

POST 4Original post

Disconnect the PSM pump electrical connector is the only way to fully disable. I have seen through data even with the switch turned off the PSM continues to trigger the brakes although on a much reduced contribution compared to when the button is not pushed. Stick with a plate diff like Guard or OS Giken is the advice I received and will give to you. My OS unit works awesome.

POST 5Original post

Zbomb figured out the Psm/LSD equation. Check his posts. My 996.2 did not come with Psm which was what I wanted. However, what I didn't know was it didn't have an LSD. I then put on a guard lsd. Makes all the difference in the world on the track and even locally on the street. You will have unbelievable control with your car. But I am one of those guys that always turns of the Psm in my Audis when driving in the snow because I want to control the throttle. Dont like nannies. LSD is a must for the track. PSM is not.

POST 6Original post

I opted for a wavetrac when I had my transmission out for a refresh, as it seemed a good compromise of having most of the benefits while avoiding the need for periodic rebuilds, all thought in my case its more for street/DE than heavy track use.

Good question. Be great if they did. Think about what you want for gearing. If you are going to drive it on the street as well as track, you want something in the middle. The reason is if you go full track, you will have a tough time moving the car around in the parking lots.

POST 9Original post

My idie installed a GT3 LSD in my 996.2. Have had no issues with PSM and it made a huge difference coming out of the corners.

POST 10Original post

I had a Guards LSD installed last year in my 2004 with PSM. It was expensive and so was labor, but if I am going to already spend thousands, whats an extra thousand was my thought. As far as PSM goes. I turn PSM off on the dash. I have found that the only time there is an issue with PSM causing some braking still, is when I trail brake a little too hard for too long on the track. Once I adjusted my trail braking slightly, I no longer have issue with PSM module. I just get a few % more of the braking done before the turn in and it is all good with no interference. Hope that helps.

POST 11Original post

When you say you can feel the open diff, what are you feeling? The inside wheel on a turn beer power, or something else? I only ask because I cant get my car to spin any wheel, and although my car has an LSD, I doubt its working after 23 years. Maybe it is? Also, my car is a 99, so its down on torque compared to yours, especially during the rev ranges you are likely seeing when this happens.
