I would have just suspected air in the system, or a clutch pedal spring sticking, but the brake pedal making the clutch pedal move made me suspect the master cylinder and possible fluid leaking between the systems.

I would start with a bleed and if that doesn't sort it inspect the bushes on the clutch and brake pedal.

Suggestion

I did temporarily remove the clutch assist spring, which helped mask the symptoms a bit for a few weeks, but ultimately the solution was to replace the master & slave cylinders.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was out yesterday having a blast to the East Coast, and since my new clutch was fitted a couple of months ago, I have found sometimes the clutch pedal would stick down, meaning I have to get my foot underneath to pop it back up.. Yesterday though, it started to happen more, and almost each time I braked heavy at an island the clutch pedal would stick when dropping down the gears. I can also feel when I braked heavy and put my left foot on the clutch it would move away from me slightly. I would have just suspected air in the system, or a clutch pedal spring sticking, but the brake pedal making the clutch pedal move made me suspect the master cylinder and possible fluid leaking between the systems. The slave is a couple of years old so I don't suspect that, I will bleed the clutch first to eliminate that, but does the issue I have point towards a master cylinder issue?

POST 2Original post

Sounds reasonable to me, if you rule out a bleed, and the slave.

POST 3Original post

I had a similar issue a few years ago. I did temporarily remove the clutch assist spring, which helped mask the symptoms a bit for a few weeks, but ultimately the solution was to replace the master & slave cylinders.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I suspect the master if anything, it is almost 22 years old.

POST 5Original post

There should be no way for fluid to move between the brake and clutch pressure circuits. The only connection is in the resevoir. However they probably share a pedal pivot shaft which could be related to the issue happening more on the brakes. It could also just be that you subconsciously press the clutch faster or slower when you're already on the brakes? I would start with a bleed and if that doesn't sort it inspect the bushes on the clutch and brake pedal.

POST 6Original post

My money is on air in the system. I've had the pedal sticking down after a clutch change and it was down to not being fully bled. Took a few gos at bleeding it too until it was cured. My trusted mechanic was getting rather frustrated with it.....and that was doing it with the correct pressure equipment to ensure it was done right. If this has only started happening after the new clutch, then that's the most likely candidate.
