The temp gauge was reading normal so we immediately pulled over and checked the coolant level, which was also fine.
Leading evidence: 'Check coolant level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

- Checked the relay (not the easiest to get to on a Convertible!) and that seems to be in working order

If someone has an early car and doesn't mind doing the same test for me (disconnect Engine Bay Temp Sensor plug and switch just ignition on) and report back if their Decklid Fan kicks in it would be appreciated

So I assume next steps would be to do the same test again but disconnect the fan plug and test to see if its getting power to it at that point and if so it suggests the fan is dead?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
The reason for the post is because my Brother-in-Law & I went for a spirited drive on Christmas day and as we were at a fairly high speed (on private roads of course) I noticed the dreaded Coolant Temp light flashing. The temp gauge was reading normal so we immediately pulled over and checked the coolant level, which was also fine. After a quick Google search my BiL found a post explaining the different reasons for the flashing light, one of which being the Engine Compartment Temperature was too high. As this flashing pattern was the same as the warning for overheating etc we assumed this to be the issue, knowing the coolant temp & level were fine.
Since then I've tried to establish if the Deck Lid Fan is at fault, which most causes for this light to come on suggest to be the culprit. So far I have -
- Not tested the temp sender. I read a post about testing it with nearly boiling water when the engine is warm and that should trigger the fan. I'm happy to carry out the test but surely the warning light in the Temp Gauge suggests that the sensor is working?
- Checked the Fuse which has not blown
- Checked the relay (not the easiest to get to on a Convertible!) and that seems to be in working order
- Tested continuity across the fan pins which was fine. Also span the fan by hand with these connected and could see the numbers change so assumed the fan was OK as well
That's as far as I've got so far. Plenty of threads online suggest the fans hardly ever come on or people have never heard theirs so Im happy to believe Im being paranoid and there isn't an issue however the warning light has me concerned that isnt the case.
Has anyone come across similar scenarios or tried to diagnose the operation of the fan before? Any pointers/tips?
TIA :thumb:
OK - ignition on & plug disconnected, no fan. So I assume next steps would be to do the same test again but disconnect the fan plug and test to see if its getting power to it at that point and if so it suggests the fan is dead? If not...?
Checked again today, this time with the multimeter. Ignition on and sensor disconnected, no power at the fan plug.
If someone has an early car and doesn't mind doing the same test for me (disconnect Engine Bay Temp Sensor plug and switch just ignition on) and report back if their Decklid Fan kicks in it would be appreciated
That will be one of the next steps to test the fan but if its not getting power when its suppose to that will be a bigger issue/harder mystery to solve!
I will test that on my '99 car tonight for you.
If you have a durametric you can test the fan with that. If you don't maybe worth seeing if someone on the forum could help, I have one and am near Sevenoaks in Kent, happy to help if you're local.
Thanks Hugh, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the offer of the help with Durametric, Im only about 45mins so good to know for future. However, I've tested the fan this morning taking a feed from the engine compartment light and the fan itself works.
I'll wait to hear the result from your test first but mine is definitely not getting power with the Engine Compartment Temp Sensor disconnected and with the ignition on.
ConradBuff what was the outcome on this??
I went to the Nordschleife this weekend to endure the chaos and closures. Whilst queueing to get off track a warning came up on the dash saying engine compartment fan not operating.
Then again at the Eurotunnel. I should add the French cannot sort a piss up in a brewery. There was a queue to get to the parking area and the same queue for the passport control. So all that happened was nobody bothered about what train they were on. Everyone just queued for the tunnel/passport control.
Anyway Conrad - update?

Ps I will test the fan works.
Not long after getting my 996.2 I had an engine compartment fan error warning on the dash. I did a bit of research and found that the relay for it is under the carpet piece behind the rear seats - sort of parcel shelf area. Put power direct to the fan and it fired up.
When I removed the carpet, the fan relay had fallen out and was on the bulkhead so I just plugged it back in and everything worked. I checked all the other relays were seated fully.
Thanks Paynewright, I did try and power the fan direct using wires from the Optimate charger yesterday but it did not fire up. I am going to give it one more go and try power direct from the battery. After that I will then have to try and squeeze through the cage to check the relays in the back.
A quick question, did you get the warning on the dash regarding the 'engine fan not operating' ??
