having to much oil can burp up into your intake and smoke or even catastrophic damage thru hydro lock of oil in the cylinder, as far as faith in oil level, as long as your car is on level ground i will always go with the dipstick to check the oil level.

You can go with the UAOS with drain back and run your oil full or over-filled by a quart and not worry about it since it can handle extra oil.

Hello to All Seeking information as to how much engine oil is safe after installing a .5 qt sump kit. Oil only registers to the first lobe of the dipstick however the display upon start up says that its nearly full. I thought I`ve heard that to much oil can cause issues with the AOS burping up oil into the coolant system. Has anyone run into this?? Thanks Frank

AOS will put oil into your intake manifold if you overfill or if it goes bad. There is a later/track focused AOS from the 997 X51 engine if memory serves, not sure if it fits on the 996 though. Someone else better-versed in that could verify. As for how much oil is safe? .5 qts over standard. The sump is basically a reservoir. If its now 0.5 qts larger in volume, thats how much more oil you can safely add.

Theoretically, an extra 0.5 quarts which should take you to full. But I wouldn't track your car with a stock AOS at 0.5 extra quarts of oil with the 0.5 sump. The stock AOS is a frail piece of plastic. Or... You can go with the UAOS with drain back and run your oil full or over-filled by a quart and not worry about it since it can handle extra oil. Before the UAOS, Porsche Motorsports build a heavy duty AOS that can be used on the 996 for the track as well as street. But you cannot run extra oil like the UAOS, which ultimately makes the UAOS a better choice today. Hope this helps.
