Suggestion

Might be worth checking the piece of cover trim that runs along under the rear window ( look into the rear of the car and it sits between the window and rear deck) ; it's attached by spring clips which work loose and then vibrate at different speeds...pull it off squeeze the clips tight and bobs your uncle..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hi folks, I've been chasing a rattle (one of many) in my 996, that I can't quite locate. Its coming from the rear-left of the car, some place behind my head. Here's what I tried / found out: -the noise only happens at speeds under 30-40 mph, on not-so-great roads i.e. where the most "vertical" movement takes place -it's not the headliner rods, or the trim parts linking the rods to the body -it seems to go away when I press on the rear-left window.... -... but tightening it didn't solve the issue ! -touching the sunroof or the sunroof bits over the headliner seems to have no bearing on the noise whatsoever -it's not the rear seat or seat belt, or the rear speaker, or the parcel shelf Any ideas? Alex

POST 2Original post

get a passenger in the back to locate the noise when you're on the move

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I think that might be the only proper way to pin down where it's coming from.

POST 4Original post

One that irritated me for months before locating it, and which seemed to be behind me, was the lever for tilting the seat forwards. Rattles are my nemesis, I’m never finished fighting them

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm good suggestion! Will look into this. It would definitely fall in the "well I didn't expect it to come from there" category. We rattle-fighters know these

POST 6Original post

I have a rattle finder file if that would help, I’ve used it (as have a few others) on my 992 and it works a treat. PM me your email if you’d like a copy and I’ll send it across - I got it from a fellow rennlist subscriber for nothing so just doing my bit to help people eliminate those bloody annoying rattles!

I have a rattle finder, he’s 13 and I chuck him in the boot - costs me 1 hour of wifi

It’s basically a zip file containing sound bites at several different frequencies, you download it onto a phone or media drive and play them through the PCM. You can sit anywhere in the car while they are playing and the rattles will sound depending on the frequency.

That's really interesting

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've spent some time in the car and it's definitely coming from the window. As soon as I touch it, it goes away. Touching any other trim in the area doesn't affect the noise whatsoever.

POST 13Original post

The screw that you adjust to alter the height the window comes up/down to, the one with the 5 or 6mm hex on it. That is plastic and as it gets old it wears and causes a nasty vibration that sounds more like it is up near your seatbelt behind your right ear. You need to take it out, cover it in red rubber grease and pop it back in, rattle will stop.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks mate - will try that!

I have a similar issue. I presume you mean behind the main passenger or driver side door cards, not the door cards for the rear seats?
