Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Team!
ex 3.2 Carrera owner looking to get back into a 911 and really looking to benefit from your experience, knowledge and opinions on the attached sound/video files of a 996.2 3.6 engine running please.
I test drove a 996.2 and loved the car, drove superbly, very well maintained with servicing, IMS/RMS, Struts, all Arms, Condensers all the usual stuff done in the past few years, so I left a deposit...
BUT.... I recorded the engine idling on my phone, and since then I've been listening to it over and over and paranoia has kicked in big time regarding bore scoring!!!
No uneven tailpipe sootiness, engine oil on the dipstick was honey clear 4K miles since last service, and I really don't know what I am hearing anymore but its driving me crazy!
Any thoughts on whether it sounds normal, or you think there is something of concern that warrants a deeper inspection would be very much appreciated!
Thanks, Simon
That sounds normal to me. Depending on wether that was startup from cold and maybe a bit of valve lifter noise (perfectly normal). Maybe get a borescope done to make the demons go away. TBH all 996's sound a bit mechanical, GT variants even more so and they're pretty much bullit proof (different engine though).
Thanks for the response, to me it sounded like lifters or diesel injectors but the more I listened to the recordings and compared with ones on LNE and youtube I got spooked.... damn internet!
I have raised my concerns with the seller and asked if we could arrange a borescope from the sump to confirm one way or the other before we decide what to do. I guess if he is already aware he'll go quiet on me and keep my deposit, would love to confirm it is not scored and complete the deal.
He did pre-warm it before I arrived which I wasn't overly happy with, and there was a tiny bit of mayo in the filler cap, but I put that down to condensation as its not been used much in the last year (200miles in 12 months due to 'health issues'.... guy seemed genuine and legit so I really hope this is something we can resolve and move forward...
Such emotive cars, tempting to just put my head in sand and go pick it up so I can go drive it!
A local Porsche independent specialist can do a borescope for you.
This will remove any doubt. Audio clips recorded and played back on phones aren't a sufficient diagnostic to tell anything really.
All that you can hear is that the engine is idling.
From personal experience, I would only purchase if you can live with knowing that the internet will forever have you thinking it is about to blow!
I'd highly recommend that you don't go seeking opinion on noises, especially online..... (PPI if dead set and nervous) IMO buy it, drive it and enjoy it - if noises and opinions will keep you awake at night, walk away. You will end up having a miserable experience and likely sell it at a loss.....
Worst case, it is c. 15k from Hartech for a new engine, thats the 996 life. But, F. me - best money you'll ever spend, ask anyone here they will tell you !
Sounds like normal injector ticking noise; my Lexus is very noticeable...ticking away happily...
However if you are of a nervous disposition or don't have a significant war chest a 996 is probably not for you especially if you look, like most of us do, to the internet for advice!
The engine can ***** itself without warning sufficiently frequently to keep Hartech and dozens of other indies busy rebuilding them!
Genuinely fantastic cars that get right under your skin but need money to maintain properly and like I side either a decent war chest or lack of risk aversion...good luck kiddo and go in eyes wide open...
If it’s any consolation, last year I fired up my 996 (who’s done 130k) and heard a loud, unusual ticking noise coming from my engine upon startup. I was convinced it was the bore score soundtrack of doom, and I gently drove it anyway (I needed to get to an appointment). During that drive it eventually went away, and I’ve never heard it since (done about 2k since then).
I’m under no illusions that my engine is in its latter stages of life, and has a date with Hartech at some point. But I was happy that it soldiers on for now.
Hi, thanks, yes the internet doesn't really help! I like to educate myself about all my cars and inevitably end up taking a spanner to them at some point which is part of the fun, I have an E53 X5 which is like Trigger's broom the amount of parts I've replaced or upgraded, but that's part of the experience and I know the car very well inside and out now after a few years. Makes little financial sense investing so much into something that will not provide financial returns, but I do allow my heart to rule my head when I have a car I am really into and its not about the money it's the drive and the experience. With the 996 it's just about getting a reasonably assured starting point so I can take care of it from that point onwards.
