Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'airlock in the system' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'airlock in the system' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check any coolant leaks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Mine was getting hot and it turned out to be the cap.

check and clean out the front radiators, then check for any coolant leaks

OP, have you tried running the car with the pressure release clip raised in the expansion tank ..?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When mine was going really high I eventually had a new expansion tank fitted and that fixed everything.
Hi, I have a 98 996 carrera 2 manual. It’s developing overheating problems. The temp gauge doesn’t go into the red but it’s above the normal limit. I suspect that the fans kick in to stop that happening. I don’t think it’s the heater matrix which means that it’s either the thermostat or the pump ( or hopefully something minor). Any suggestions ? Also if it is the pump or thermostat are there any other compatible parts from other models that I could use as I’m based in Cyprus and the delay in getting replacement parts as well as the expense are steep.
When you say the temp gets high, how high does it get? In heavy traffic mine still nudges towards the 100oC mark, but never goes passed it.

It’s also worth checking the expansion tank cap as the original ones have a fault. You can get the newer/updated caps for less than £20
Morning all, I've owned my 99 C4 since early November and covered 5000 miles already. It's been a long winter as we all know and only just really started to warm up. Since the purchase I've had new condensers, radiators and compressor fitted, all under warranty. I too notice that most of the time the temp gauge sits reliably at 80 degrees mark but recently in traffic has indicated 90 degrees. All fans work well and as soon as moving at motorway speeds it comes down, especially when the aircon is on which I understand is the way it's supposed to be done? After having all the work done I fitted 4 zunsport grilles to protect the new hardware....I wonder if these affect the cooling somewhat..? I'm getting the impression this is normal behaviour. I've no leaks and she uses zero coolant.
Just my 2p worth .
Mine was getting hot and it turned out to be the cap.
I was also surprised to find it had a massive amount of air in the system as that’s one thing I haven’t needed to touch. I can only assume the old cap wasn’t maintaining a high enough pressure.
I had a similar event occur which did lead to overheating.
The problem was an airlock in the system.
I bought a vaccum bleeder from ebay for about £20 and used it to suck out the air lock. Trying to bleed the air out of a 996/7 etc is a fools errand as it is a bit hit or miss.
Another cause could be that the system is not pressurising. This is generally caused by hose clips not tightened enough, gaskets weeping (water pump/thermostat), a damaged radiator or as has been mentioned a faulty pressure cap.
If the water pump is on its way out then look for any sign of water egress/rusty streaks around the impellor shaft.
But if you are lucky it will just be too much air in the system.
