I got my 2001 996TT about a year ago and almost all of the wood trim pieces need to be replaced. They are either cracked or the glue has let go and the wood is warped. I have found most of the pieces at various places, but it's really hard to tell if they all match. There were so many different trim variations and colors. The piece that has been the hardest to find is the instrument surround trim. Except for a super expensive carbon fiber or aluminum, I cannot find a replacement part for this. I think I just want to replace it all with black trim. Carbon fiber would be a second option, but I really don't want to spend that kind of money on trim pieces at the moment.
Anyone else replace all the wood in their car??? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
That is a good thread. The water transfer option might be your cheapest way to go. A bit of elbow grease and some prep and you may be set. Wood pieces in good shape are tough to find. You may want to try and sell the ones in good shape. I am always on the lookout for any light wood pieces. Good luck.
I had never heard of water transferring, but looks pretty interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the wood, but don't dislike it enough to want to replace it all, so it's a total bummer that it doesn't hold up better. I think I have found sources for all of the parts in black except the instrument cluster surround. Everything I can find is either for the entire "pod" that sits on the dash, is the wrong color, or is carbon fiber or aluminum and a billion dollars.
I would think this came up in the other thread butCraft Customs. Seriously this is the only option if you want restoration quantity wood trim. Can we pin this as the fix for cracked wooden trim?
