I've fitted a
Kenwood
head unit to my
Boxster
, and it has several camera inputs. I'm keen to install a reversing camera (as one bad thing about the
Boxster
is the visibility when reversing with the roof up).
License/number plate replacements look like a good idea (so long as they do retain a light so I don't fail my MOT/inspection. I can't find any that for a
987.1
Boxster
.
Has anyone had any success sourcing one?
Thanks
Andrew

I realize it might not be expensive enough - but think of it as saving money for the fancy watch that will be in the facebook pic of your hand on the steering wheel.
This works great. It has worked great for me for almost 3 years now. There is a hole beind the license plate, the wiring from the camera can be fished through that hole and into the trunk area. Since you have a Boxster running the wires is trivial. Up behind the trunk lining on the right side (or left if you prefer), up and over the hump next to the removeable storage (or speaker) housing on top of the hump, then behind the carpeting that covers the fire-wall behind the seat - to the split between the top and bottom carpet, tuck under the top carpet, run it over to the center console and tuck it up under the edge of the console and right to the center radio area. Piece'a cake.
Connect the red wires on it to the reverse light +, the other wire is the video signal. The red wire will do two things (1) light up the LED's on it (2) send a signal up to your Kenwood that you attach to the camera-video-trigger wire (it will be in your installation manual) - that will switch the camera on and display it on your Kenwood when your reverse light goes on, which is when you're in reverse.
Easy-Peasy
Performance is WONDERFUL. The LED's are IR (not visible to the human eyeball - but the camera is VERY sensitive to IR) and are capable of lighting up objects more than 100' behind the car (like my neighbors house across the steet when I back out of my garage) and no one can see the light. The image on the screen is better than the factory one on my '11 Cayenne, and as good as the one on the loaner 2022 Macan S that I had last week. The night illumination is superior to both.
The camera can be adjusted up and down easily so you can get the perfect picture (a bit of your bumper) in the image onscreen. It isn't really noticeable (with US plates) since it's tucked up under the lip for the plate recess on the rear bumper.
If I sound enthusiastic about it - that's because I am - damn thing is outstanding and $12 USD. Hard to beat that sort of value, and easy to install.
Good luck! Let us know how it works out for you!
I have a
Kenwood
head unit in my
Cayman
as well and installed a
Kenwood
CMOS-230 backup camera. It works fine and was pretty easy to install. However, it cost me $100 from Crutchfield and seeing Don's option above makes me cringe a little. That said, life is short and complaining about the quality of the backup camera in my
Porsche
makes me cringe even more. I'm lucky and try to appreciate that fact every day.✌
Best,
George
This is great - thanks. My car is UK spec, so the license plate fitting is different, but it does give me some ideas. How did you route the cable?
