Hi all
I have just bought a 987, with radio and cd, ebay has a 2nd hand porsche satnav, which could be a nice upgrade. Probably I am being ignorant but would this just be an unplug and plug in replacement or will I have navigation aerials, telephone mic issues. Will my Bose cause additional issues?
If anyone knows that would be great.
It's been 30 years since I've changed a stereo in a car, so I'm way out of date!
Thanks
Keith
Hi Keith.
First thing - lets move your message into the correct forum. As you noted, you own a 987, you posted this in the 981 section.
Hang on, I'll get back to you..
OK - we're where we should be.
Your Bose system means you have a fiber-loop connecting things like the amplifier(s) and the radio. That does complicate things, especially if you want to use the existing amp and speakers.
The used NAV system - do you have a link to it you can share? Generally since people paid way too much for these when they were new - they ask way too much for used ones, especially considering the rather primitive technology it provides and the cost of updating things like the maps. Most people go to aftermarket to get modern features and an up-to-date nav system with current maps. The system will probably be a plug/play sort of thing, IF it doesn't match the system to the vehicle VIN# (an anti-theft function.) If it did, it will be locked to the vehicle it came out of and won't work in your vehicle. So that depends on the vintage of the nav system and what car it came from.
The Bose system complicates even switching to a newer aftermarket system since you need a fiber-adaptor to connect to the Bose amp, and even then, some of the Bose speakers will not work, the aftermarket systems don't know what to do with the Bose system. Many people forget about the Bose amp and either install their own amp, or drive the existing speakers directly off the speaker level outputs of the aftermarket head.
For lots of options, I'd suggest spending some time on the Crutchfield website. They do offer plug-and-play aftermarket solutions, probably for less than a used Porsche NAV system.

Thanks really helpful, link to item:
2008 Porsche Boxster 987 SAT NAV CD PHONE UNIT | eBay
That's cheap - but that's all I can say good about it. That system may require a separate CD player dedicated to the NAV map disk (or DVD player) - it's of the era that used that technology. ALL the technology in it is about 20 years old now. It does have the female input for a fiber-cable connector (the black rectangular connector) and it will require a GPS antenna and an external microphone, which is not in your car (Porsche doesn't put things in that aren't part of what the car is ordered as.. each car is bespoke, including the wiring harnesses..)
If it was me - I'd forgeddaboutit and see if there is a place like Crutchfields on your side of the pond who can put together a complete plug and play solution for you. It will cost more - but it will also be state of the art and not ancient (electronically) technology.
Thanks much appreciated, I will do as you suggest.
I fitted a Sony XAV 550D unit to both my 987 and subsequent 981. It has Apple Carplay (android as well) . Pretty straightforward to install.
I got my kit form Carl at

. He is really helpful.
I might be selling my headunit and fitting kit however as I am about to swap my 991 CS for a 2016 981 GTS that has Bose. Apparently its a problem to get the two units - Sony (or any aftermarket head unit) and Bose to play, meaning I'll have to go down the joyeauto route of taking my Porsche unit apart and adding parts.

If anyone knows of a Bose fix, I'd be glad to hear!
