Just used jump leads and that did seem to engage the starter but didn't have enough power to start the car so I assumed battery was kaput!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just about to go for a short run to make sure all is ready for our trip to Netherlands tomorrow morning. On opening the car the alarm went off, took some time to silence it fiddling around with key and remote and then it kept sounding fairly randomly. Tried to start the car during a quiet period as all displays were normal except starter wouldn't engage! Made an odd noise, new to me. Wasn't sure if the starter had jammed but didn't seem so from rocking it in gear. I was feeling fairly unhappy by this stage but thought to rig up some extra help from an old battery which I had lying around. Just used jump leads and that did seem to engage the starter but didn't have enough power to start the car so I assumed battery was kaput! By this time it was 3.30 on a Saturday afternoon but the Gods were smiling at last as the local ECP/CP4L had a Bosch 80 Ahr in stock, identical to the old one, £103 after current discount. They closed at 4 but just made it! New battery fitted, short run later and all seems OK. Had to reset a few things like window closing but no issues. The old battery was 2017 so I suppose that's not too bad! But why do OE batteries seem to last much longer than replacements?? My wifes BMW 118i convertible is 2011 and still on the original battery! I can't be sure why the battery died but I did notice the conditioner was not working so perhaps it just lost too much charge to do its job. I will connect it up and see if it recovers. It does seem that very strange things happen when voltage drops too low!!

POST 2Original post

and it's true that when the voltage drops very strange things happen, indeed new battery solved a lot of issues and for the cost which is a tank of fuel, a worthy maintenance item
