But I replaced discs and pads on all four corners a year or so ago with Brembo parts and it was very straightforward.

I’ve replaced my discs several times with pattern parts and it’s an easy job.

I still think the 996 is the easiest of any car that I’ve changed the pads and discs on.
Use brembo, sebro, pagid, pf in the past and continue

I've used Brembo, Sebro, Pagid, PF in the past and continue to do with with no issue
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I bought a brand new set of brembo discs and pads for my c4s from Design911 thinking I would get my indie to put it on for me at last service however they refused to install saying they had issues with it in the past so they don't touch anything apart Porsche rated. From what everyone is saying here I shouldn't have any issues with it so I am looking to install them myself now before next MOT.
I know it's supposed to be an easy job but I have never done it before. And like everything 'easy' am sure there is always a catch/exception to the rule. Is there anything (rusty bolt etc.) that can potentially make things more difficult than it needs to be? Or is it always a walk in the park?
Thanks
I guess all cars can be slightly different…. But I replaced discs and pads on all four corners a year or so ago with Brembo parts and it was very straightforward. I’ve had more hassle with newer Audis! Go for it. Plenty of guides and you vids to help and satisfying (and cheaper) to diy
what a strange thing to say, as Porsche discs and pads are just 3rd party discs and pads in a Porsche box

which Indy is this ?
Porkchops - Bravo for you wanting to get your hands dirty! Pelican Parts (US) has a very useful set of tutorials (with pics) to help guide you through the process. Expect the job to take every bit of 5 hours first go. Start with the fronts.
You’ll need a broad tip Phillips for the set screws. Rubber mallet. Awl or something like it to drive the pad spring pins out. Brake pad spreader. Needle nose pliers. Flat blade metal putty knife or drywall flat blade. Bulb baster and clean container for brake fluid. Medium size flat tip. Brake grease. Spray for loosening any corrosion. Small torch.
My two bits:
-Take pictures with cell phone, as needed. Makes it simple to install the wear sensors properly. Will be huge help if you’re replacing parking brake shoes!
-Remove the cap on brake reservoir and keep an eye on brake fluid level as you spread pads, compressing the pistons.
-Do not strip the set screws, or over tighten.
-Don’t lose the small pin retainers.
-Use flat blade putty knife to remove the dampers from the pads themselves if the pads don’t want to come out.
-The putty knife will be useful putting the dampers back in before you slide new pads in. The rear dampers are the most challenging.
-Don’t be afraid to give the back of the discs a good whack to pop them free of the hub.
-Adjusting parking brake is fiddly and will be a tad frustrating.
-Check the condition of suspension, wheel bearings and hubs since you have access.
After the first wheel your confidence will grow exponentially.
I still think the 996 is the easiest of any car that I’ve changed the pads and discs on.
My local indie is usually not keen on fitting parts they didn’t source themselves, but they are happy if I procure the parts they specify. If they warrant the work, I think they’re entitled to dictate what parts are used. Seems fair to me.
Yeah I was a bit surprised to be honest but it is what it is. I would rather not publicly say who it is as they are a highly reputable one and I am happy with them being '*****' with my car when it comes to service and maintenance. Even if I don't necessarily agree with their decision, it's their business and I respect it.
You put those same discs and pads in a Porsche box, they would fit them, I've seen this far too many times for Indy's trying to make out they are the best, I don't doubt they are good and better than an OPC but if they have a location monopoly in the area and are playing up to it,
but in that same way, what if someone turned up with Chinese made copy discs that lasted a month, no different, so their choice to fit what they want to fit
FCP Euro do some good instructional video's on YouTube on the 996.. They have done a brake change one which is very detailed and worth a view if you fancy doing the job yourself
The first job I did on mine was front disks and pads, pretty simple job and plenty of tutorials. I think it took me longer to jack the car up on stands and get the wheels off than it did to do the disks and pads.
I’m sorry, but that’s quite true. An indie, which is more often than not, a small business that has to stand behind their work. They are entitled to choose the quality of the parts they fit if we expect them to warrant their work. Some parts are similar to the parts that Porsche call their own, but certainly not all.
which applies to almost all parts, they have to fit what they are confident to fit so as to avoid a faulty or inferior part supplied by a customer
however we are discussing brake discs and pads, take discs specially by Sebro, Brembo, Textar, Zimmerman,
Best combo is Sebro discs and Textar Pads, where Textar are OEM for Porsche, just doesn't say that in the Porsche box as with all parts Porsche have supplied through their supply chain
It's a straightforward job, but the little retaining screw that simply holds the disc on to the hub can stick and drilling it out is no fun. The rears may take a whack to release them from the hand brake shoes inside the bell of the disc. The pads are easy enough on open backed Brembo calipers, but less fun if you need to push the pistons back in without the right spreader tool. Thankfully my friends and I have a good spread of tools for all these fun jobs.
Use an impact driver to remove the screws otherwise they easily chew up and always refit with aluminium or copper grease. I’ve replaced my discs several times with pattern parts and it’s an easy job.
