I know they have done subtle styling changes every year, but I recall being blown away maybe back around 2010 when the changes all came together well, particularly the way the top, when up, looks more 911-ish.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ours is an '01, we only drive it for short little fun outings, but we think we want to upgrade by a few years. I know they have done subtle styling changes every year, but I recall being blown away maybe back around 2010 when the changes all came together well, particularly the way the top, when up, looks more 911-ish. What was that step-up model year?

POST 2Original post

Hello, do you mean the 987 or 981 or 982? 987 981 718 (982) Regards, Markus

POST 4Original post

....2003 introduced the glass rear window and added another roof bow.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am talking about the Boxster. Ours is a Boxster S. Have done a little searching and I think it is the 2012 when the back of the convertible top got a little rakier.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2008 was the first year called Gen 2. Here is a picture of an '08, and the top's rear shape looks more bubble-like that on our '01

POST 7Original post

Boxster spyder is all I can think off the Boxster has always looked very different.

POST 8Original post

I belive that you are referring to the 981 Boxster launched in 2012. The top is styled to blend into the body lines and not stick out like an afterthought.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 499789

I think that is exactly what he is referring to, big improvement in the top lines as every top before that look like an ugly hump

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 499812

Agreed, the top on the 981 (2012- ) is much flatter and more rakish than the previous "bubble tops".

POST 11Original post

Also agree. 986.2 (2003-04) did add the 4th bow for a slight improvement in the shape, but it wasn't until 981 MY 2013 it looked really good IMO. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

POST 12Original post

Yup. What a difference that makes over the 986 and 987. Love my 986 but definitely doesn't look as good with the top up.

POST 13Original post

I like the glass window and rear defroster on my '03S. But I think the top lines of the earlier 986's with one less top bow look cleaner (as do the earlier cars front and rear bumpers) and the rear of the earlier cars' tops is more raked. But from the driver's seat it doesn't matter! And with the top down they look the same!

Couldn't have said it better. Looks are so subjective; beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

POST 17Original post

....so it's 103 degrees......Drive faster and wear sunscreen. Man up!

POST 18Original post

....wait a minute........I just noticed the PRNDL.....You drive an automatic. Never mind. That explains it.
