If I dig that deep, I'll replace the valve body with a rebuilt one and change the fluid all at once.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, Ive done an exhaustive search both on this forum and google and I cant find an answer to my problem. I have a 2001 non turbo C2 996 cabrio with a automatic/tiptronic trans. The transmissions torque converter unlocks VERY easily. If Im cruising at 70mph and I give it more than 5% throttle, it unlocks. Once it unlocks, I cannot get the torque converter to re-lock unless I completely let of the gas pedal. Needless to say, my gas mileage is suffering and it takes some effort to try and keep the torque converter locked while at speed. I do NOT have any DTC codes and there is no check engine light. Therefore, I assume this issue if likely mechanical and not electrical. My thoughts on the problem: 1.Soft failure of the throttle position senor (integrated with the electronic throttle body) 2.Bad TCC solenoid in the valve body 3.Bad valve body (valves leaking by/not properly seating or diverting fluid) 4.Bad Torque Converter Any comments of help would be appreciated.

While there will not be any DTC's -- obtainable via some off the shelf OBD2 code reader -- there is likely Porsche proprietary error codes available from either the DME of the Tip controller. You will need access to a PST2 (Porsche System Tester 2) or the newer tool: PIWIS (I think I have that right). Durametric may offer the ability to obtain transmission/drive train related error codes, too. Can you check the condition of the lockup solenoid and its electrical connections and wiring condition? In fact check all electrical/signal connections to the Tip. An edumacated guess is the Tip needs throttle input (the amount of torque being demanded by the driver) and speed too. Also, what about the Tip fluid level?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Macster, thanks for your reply. I'm pretty technical savvy. I rebuilt the engine in this car a year ago. Anyway, back to the subject: The level in the trans is fine. The fluid could use a change (not terribly dirty), but the level is OK. I don't use a generic scanner. I have an Autel scanner (I can't remember the exact model number, but it was in the $300 price range). The lockup solenoid is on the valve body. If I dig that deep, I'll replace the valve body with a rebuilt one and change the fluid all at once.
