I recently ordered a
Kenwood
system to replace the old
Cayman
CDR24
, non
BOSE
Installation was pretty straight forward with a couple of exceptions:
1. You must run switched power from the fuse box to the radio.
2. you don not need the illumination wire
3. You do not need the amplified antenna wire.
and the biggie...
4. In order for
Apple CarPlay
to function you MUST hook into the illusive 'Speed Pulse Wire'
I spent about 8 hours surfing the net and the Planet 9 forums with no clear direction on where to go for this, but by connecting some dots form different sources I figured it out.
So here it is: The solution:
FRONT CONTROL UNIT, PLUG A (42pin), PIN 37(White wire with Brown stripe).
The wire you need is on the Front Control Unit - located in the front trunk (frunk) on the right hand side just in front of where the the CD changer is/or would be.
The unit has two plugs. The rear plug is the one you want.
-remove the frunk rubber seal
-remove the plastic trim/casing that has the door to the CD changer (7 Phillips screws)
-remove the cover plate form the control unit (1 larger Phillips screw) to expose the plug harnesses.
-I fished the Speed Sense wire through the fire wall via the rubber grommet just behind the battery. The wire was just long enough at 6ft. (easier to do if you loosen and move the battery to the right a bit)
-I unplugged PLUG A (a little bit finicky in tight quarters but doable)
-I Used a Red T-Tap to make the connection about 6" from the plug.
-Zip tied the wire in place
-reassembled the front end.
-The PARK BRAKE wire input for the Kenwood I simply grounded.
Important note
: you must drive the car for the radio to recognize the input.
All functionality of the Kenwood is available now.

Thanks for this info! That might also be useful for running electric power steering since they also use a VSS signal.

I’m installing an Alpine and need to connect the speed sensor to the 42 pin harness. When you say on the right side is that the passenger side? It would also be helpful to have a large picture of the frunk of where the control unit is? This is the last piece of the puzzle to complete the install. BTW… I’m doing this to a 2006
Boxster
that had a
PCM
unit (went bad). Thanks, Bruce.
